"Iron Man 3" Won't Explore "Demon in a Bottle" Storyline

Posted: November 1st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Iron Man 3" WonSubmit Comment
During the Long Beach Comic-Con, "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black revealed that Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle will return for the new movie and hinted that he's not a fan of The Mandarin.

Now comes word that the helmer also commented on whether the third installment will explore the famous "Demon in a Bottle" storyline that many thought was going to end up in "Iron Man 2."

"It's part of Tony's character, but I think the 'Demon in a Bottle' aspect, if you go there, you really have to go there," Black explained. "The film then becomes about that, because the journey that involves recovering from alcoholism is an entire movie."

Black made it clear that he is not shying away from the dark elements of Stark's character, but he just doesn't want the movie to be about addiction to alcohol that would ultimately force him to including "Tony's descent into alcoholic madness."

In other words, "That's maybe not where we want to be," he said.

I totally agree. Demon in a bottle would not feel like a iron man movie, yet is a great story. I like the idea of the 3rd movie will be more like Tom Clancy. I trust Shane Black. I'm optimistic.

No mandarin and no demon in a battle story arch...well I'm not sure how I feel about that guy yet. IM3 better not be a freakin soap opera.

Sounds like this guy doesn't have a f*ckin' clue as to what he's going to do with this movie.

YeA all he's gotta do is look at some Iron Man comic books and make a movie out of it DUH

At least Robert Rodriguez made Sin City look like the graphic novel.

I agree. What Shane Black is looking in this new installment is to put the character in a dangerous situation that will make decide which is more important for him.... Demon in a Bottle storyline looks great, but then again, Iron Man 3 will be 28 Days or any recovering addiction movie instead of an action drama film, which is suppose to be this one.....

So this will be worse than part 2?

Demon in a bottle (IM #128 if memory serves) is unnecessary for the movies. This is supposed to be hero stuff anyway. Good call on them. It was covered in the comic, leave it there. No one wants to pay $12. to see a hero booze it up for 90 minutes.

Comparing it to IM2 isn't setting the bar very high in my opinion.

You're right... it isn't.

As long as this isn't an Avengers 2 advertisement it will be awesome.

Yeah, this was a good play. Demon in a Bottle simply isn’t the right material for a (continuing) big screen adaptation of the character. I realize there are a lot of us that think these films should be deep, dark, mature, moody and “sophisticated” ...and in turn dread the very notion that Iron Man is ultimately aimed for kids. But you know what? At the end of the day youngsters are a large part of the comic book movie demographic, like it or not; personally, I think that’s the way it should be.

This doesn’t mean that Iron Man 3 cannot be smart or clever or dramatic. I’m encouraged to know that Black is forgoing alcoholism and Chinese mysticism (leave the magic stuff to Thor, and, can you imagine those two storylines in one movie?!) for a Tom Clancy-style geopolitical action thriller. This could be like The Hunt for Red October or Clear and Present Danger ...with f*cking Iron Man! That would be a refreshing approach to the whole superhero movie fiasco of the past decade. Sounds rad to me.

Anytime they make a superhero film where he battles his his personal demons, its usually the third film. SUPERMAN 3 and SPIDERMAN 3 come to mind. And they a ALWAYS suck. Glad Black is not going that route.

Why would they do Demon in a Bottle again? They already did that in IM2.

I can't blame this director for not knowing which direction to go. The fans want to see the Mandarin, even though he's one of the most hated and ridiculed villains around. It doesn't matter what he does with the Mandarin, odds are that the fans won't like it. Personally, I think they should draw his story out into a 4th movie while they very slowly drop hints of alien technology, so the Mandarin's origin doesn't cheese out the audience.
