"Puss in Boots" Sets Halloween Weekend Record

"Puss in Boots" Sets Halloween Weekend RecordSubmit Comment
Despite bad weather and this being the Halloween weekend, "Puss in Boots" was still able to take first place at the domestic box office, beating the third "Paranormal Activity," which had to settle for second place.

"Puss in Boots" grossed $34 million, setting a new Halloween weekend record, surpassing "Saw 3," which took in $33.6 million back in 2006. Despite great results, the animated film, which has an 81% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, still opened far worse than any of the "Shrek" installments.

Justin Timberlake's sci-fi thriller "In Time," which has a 36% fresh rating, landed in third place with $12 million. "Even though we were up against game 7 of the World Series on Friday and a pretty severe storm on Saturday, we still came in right around pre-release expectations," said Fox.

The other wide release of the weekend was Johnny Depp's "The Rum Diary," which grossed only $5 million, which landed it in fifth place. The $45 million film will struggle to make back its budget, especially since it only has a 51% fresh rating.

"Anonymous," which was downgraded to a limited release at the last second, grossed $1 million from 265 theaters. That's $3,774 per theater. No word if that's good enough to expand the film into more markets.

Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Tintin" opened in many European countries, already grossing $55.8 million. That pretty much guarantees that Peter Jackson will be directing the sequel.

Didn't even know Puss in Boots came out this weekend. Well, shows how much I care about the movie.

Unfortunately, Paranormal Activity 3 is on course to cross the $100 million mark by next week. Which means we will be getting about 8 more of these movies. *sigh*

How about 'Boot in Puss' - the kicking in the cooter of Brooke Hogan for trying to act.
