James Mangold on His Plans for "Wolverine 2"

James Mangold on His Plans for "Wolverine 2"Submit Comment
Director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) spoke about the upcoming "Wolverine" sequel, saying that the reason he signed on for the project was because he liked the idea of making a film about a unique character in a really unique environment.

"The fact that half of the characters in this movie speak Japanese," he elaborated. "This is like a foreign-language superhero movie that's as much a drama and a detective story and a film noir with high-octane action as it is anything like a conventional tentpole film."

Mangold went on to say he and Mark Bomback (Unstoppable, Live Free or Die Hard) decided to re-write the script that Darren Aronofsky and Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) previously handed in. The new version, he said, compares to such classics as "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Chinatown."

"[It's] much more about Logan getting lost in this very unique and insulated world of Japanese culture, gangster culture, and ninja culture," he explained. "The fighting is going to be unique because it's all influenced by Japanese martial arts. I think more than anything, it's a character piece, asking really interesting questions that are what pulled me in about what it means to be immortal. What is it to live forever, when you lose everyone you've ever loved? Either you watch them get killed, or you just lose them by attrition. What is it to feel the burden of saving mankind through all of its mistakes, over and over and over again. What's the toll it takes on you as a living being that is somehow living this Frankensteinian, eternal life?"

Hmm, Mangold is an hit/miss and neither Unstoppable or Live Free or Die Hard was any good, so excuse me if I don't think their script can improve Aronofsky's and McQuarrie's.

agreed, sorry but if you have a screenplay by Aronofsky and McQuarrie if front of you, then don't f*ck with it.

I hope Wolverine 2 works out well because X-Men Origins: Wolevrine was just awful, with the timeline and also the characters.

I hope Mangold gets the timeline right and make a great Wolverine prequel that the fans desevered.

X-Men: First Class is the best prequel movie ever.

@ Freudian, dont mean to burst your bubble or anything but Mangold didnt direct Live Free Die Hard, that masterpiece of sh*t was done by none less than len wiseman. It may be a smart move in the future to look up info before you start posting it. As for Mangold, his record is so/so. Walk the line, Copland, 3:10 to Yuma and Girl interrupted were all good films (imo) but Knight and Day and Identity were both below sub par... It comes down to how much control the studio will have. if they say hey do what you think will make the fans happy then yes this will be a bad ass film. But its fox so we know where this will be going. Down the sh*tter.

Pretty sure Freud knows he didn't direct live free he's talking the fact he wrote that movie.

Maybe best you check all the facts before you pull someone up, ok

@ Nawtnt. you're on it like blu bonnet sir. And yes x-men first class is very under rated. It was hands down the best comic book film of the summer, if not of the yr. The characters were well developed. The story made sense, even the time line was pretty accurate. And Magneto was bad ass. He was a mix of Bond and Vader.

Does anyone else think that We probably wont ever see Hugh Jackman play Wolverine again? I kinda have a feeling about that. I don't even know what other actors could pull off Wolverine.

No one is saying he directed Live Free or Die Hard !!

Mark Bomback wrote that movie and Mangold freud is saying is hit or miss.

Me i like the guy Cop Land, Walk the Line,Identity and even last years Knight and Day are all good movies IMO

...

but lets be honest. Do you really think FOX will produce a big budget superhero film that has a sh*t load of foregin language. Sad to say, but most of the American audience won't want that, and will assume that the rest of world is incapable of watching a film with lots of subtitles
