Redbox Raises DVD Rental Price

Posted: October 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Redbox Raises DVD Rental PriceSubmit Comment
Netflix has been hard after increasing prices for its service. And now Redbox has released statement, announcing that it will raise prices as well. Read the full statement below:

"Starting on Monday, October 31, the daily rental charge for DVDs will change to $1.20 a day. The price change is due to rising operating expenses, including new increases in debit card fees. Daily rental charges for Blu-ray Discs and video games won't change. Additional-day charges for DVDs rented before 10/31 won't be affected, either.

In order to make the transition easier, Redbox will discount the first day of all online DVD rentals to $1.00 from 10/31 through 11/30. Additional rental days will be $1.20.

This marks our first price change in more than eight years as we work hard to keep prices low for our customers.

I understand why they do it, but this is the beginning of the end.

I remember renting movies on VHS back in the day for $2.50. This is more than reasonable to me.

It's cool. They give away so many free rental coupons and codes that I can't remember the last time I paid full price for a REDBOX rental.

@Taco - exactly. Many things are comparatively cheaper these days, but people only see the increases. I remember back 20 years ago used VHS were $14.99.

Netflix raising their prices, taking advantage (so they thought) of the collapse of Blockbuster has given them (Netflix) a black eye. Then they were going to split the company, then they didn't. Who's running Netflix anyway... the Lohans?! Just like higher fuel prices are making hybrids and electrical cars popular before their time, the price increases from these video companies push more people towards the torrent sites. Like we all do in life, they'll learn the hard way.

I've always thought Redbox was undercharging. They could get away with $2.

$2 for new releases, $1 for older films and straight to DVD or foreign films would be fair.

the big difference is redbox's statement doesn't come off as mean or in a 'you owe us' tone like netflix.

this is a reasonable price change.
