Ben Affleck to Direct Stephen King's "The Stand"

Ben Affleck to Direct Stephen KingSubmit Comment
Ben Affleck (The Town), who is now helming "Argo," has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's "The Stand," which was previously turned into a mini-series.

"The Stand" is a story of good vs evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

Back in August, Warner Bros was in talks with director David Yates and writer Steve Kloves, who worked together on the last three "Harry Potter" installments. Apparently things didn't work out.

During the last interview with King, the author said that he would like to see Jake Gyllenhaal play the lead, adding that he believes the book would have to become a trilogy of films to be adapted properly.

Saw the original movie with Gary Sinise. The special effects kinda sucked but the acting was worse. Not really sure if I would want to see these movies as a trilogy.

Impossible!!!! Where you gonna get the fans for this one. The Stand is perfect disturbed horror drama about the end of the world. Itīs not Indy, not Batman or even The Lord of the RIngs to get devoted people to see this one. One film could work it out but a trilogy, never!!!!!

Nearly impossible, the book is just too dense. And yeah, I don't feel like box office returns would justify a trilogy for this.

Gary Sinise should play Randall Flagg, he can make a creepy bad guy turn

The book was amazing. Gonna be tough to make if it's not a trilogy.

Wow that's taking Ben Affleck's ability to make decent movies focused on the state of Main to the absolute furthest stretch.

King would have probably be better off testing the waters with Affleck by writing a horror movie about the entire Boston Red Sox's being turned into berserking eaters of human flesh because they accidentally all get injected with a bad batch of steroids...
