William Monahan on "The Departed" Sequel

William Monahan on "The Departed" SequelSubmit Comment
Collider caught up with "The Departed" writer William Monahan, to discuss the possibility of the rumored prequel and sequel to the Oscar-winning film. Monahan revealed that he's got the entire story for a follow-up in his head.

"My idea actually is to set the film before, during and after the action of the first film, which I think would be extraordinary," he explained. "Essentially, in the middle section of the thing you'd see actions that take place during the original 'Departed,' but aren't on screen in the original 'Departed.' There would be off-screen things that occur at that point in the story. But it would work seamlessly as a movie of its own."

Regarding whether Monahan thinks the film will ever happen, he stated: "No. I think Warner Bros would have liked to see a synopsis of it. I don't do synopses and I don't pitch. Personally, I don't know if it's ever going to happen."

Kind of treading on Godfather territory here, No need for a sequel IMO

The chinese version of infernal Affairs is a trilogy so the writer is going to cut and paste again and get an easy paycheck.

I prefer to watch State of grace with Sean penn and Gary oldman

Agree Band State Of Grace is an f'in top movie

One of Oldman's very best roles right up there with Bex Bissell,Sid Vicious and Stansfield IMO

Hell yeah state of grace f*ckin rocked. Ed Harris was a beast in that movie.

Yep, no need for sequel or prequel, if you want to see those then go watch the originals.

No sequel please. And Monahan you don't pitch? What's it like living life as that catcher?
Kurskij writes:

I don't do synopses and I don't pitch.

^badass

Could've done a better job on "London Boulevard" though, Mr. Monahan.

It could've been oh-so-good and turned out as mess.

Don't do synopsis and don't pitch? Basically he just does what he's told. He does not have any original ideas by himself? Sounds like an ideal Hollywood writer.

Why have a sequel?

The Departed was a amazing action thiller movie, a great masterpiece.

But one thing that destoryed the movie at the end was:

SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!
SPOILER ALERT!

Leonard DiCaprio being killed off.

Why kill off Leo after the whole movie, the audience cared for his charcater which I well did.

Okay Nicholson was killed that was understandable as he was the bad guy but when Leo was shot in the head, I thought the movie was over for me and then Matt was killed off by Mark Walberg which I thought was great as he was also the second bad guy.

The Departed didn't need to be based on Internal Affairs and could had be based on itself.

So despite it is being a great action thiller movie, the ending destoryed it.

Thanks a lot Monahan and Martin Scorsese, **** you both.

What tt said (in his first post). Beat me to it. This movie needs a sequel like the world needs Michael Lohan.
Freudian_Nightmare writes:

@nawtnt: For real? The Departed had to be based on Infernal Affairs because it was based on Infernal Affairs. Otherwise the movie wouldn't have existed. You can't make a movie based on an another movie without basing it on said movie.

It's quite simple, really.
Kurskij writes:

^yep, esp. considering that in some scenes they not only remade it, but practically reshot it frame-to-frame.

DaveThePhotoGuy writes:

@nawtnt

Because...spolier alert!!!!

That's what happened in the original.

Imagine the backlash it would have got if they changed the ending.

Plus I heard Leo and Damon wanted to keep the original ending too.
