"Real Steel" Beats "Footloose" and "The Thing" at Box Office

"Real Steel" Beats "Footloose" and "The Thing" at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Hugh Jackman's "Real Steel" remained in first place at the domestic box office this weekend, grossing over $16 million for a worldwide total of $108 million. Since the $80 million is considered a hit, sequel talks are already underway.

"Footloose" remake had to settle for second place with $16.1 million on a $24 million budget. It has a 72% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes and will likely earn its budget back by next week.

"The Thing" prequel landed in third place with $8.7 million, which is less than the $10 million Universal Pictures was hoping to get. The new movie has a lousy 33% fresh rating and will struggle to make back its $35 million budget.

The other wide release of the weekend was "The Big Year" comedy, which brought together Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black. Unfortunately the plot about identifying species of birds didn't attract audiences, causing the film to debut in ninth place. It grossed $3.3 million and has a 40% fresh rating. "It's a quality film with a quality cast and a quality filmmaker, but we missed," said 20th Century Fox.

"It's a worst film with a unqualified cast and a bad filmmaker, but still got $3.3 million," said me.

If Hollywood keeps remaking 80's classics then the studio might lose lots of money.

Look at Real Steel, it made lots of money not only because it was a great movie but it was original.

Hollywood should do novel and video game movies adaption instead of remakes.

The Thingquel was not bad, it was actually pretty scary. Many novel adaptations and 99.9 percent of video game adaptations fail for one simple reason, too much studio/producer involvement. Just about any classic is good because it was the product of one mind's vision. When the studios told Stallone they didn't want him to play Rocky, he told them to screw themselves and threatened to take his script elsewhere. The viewer can sniff out corporate influenced movies that are processed the hell out of for mass appeal and those films are generally ignored or forgotten in a year's time.

And by 'average' of 'Real Steel' (I always thought it looked good on the previews we saw) - I was referring more to it's expectations. I'm glad it's as well-received as it is.
