Joel Schumacher Says Val Kilmer is the Best Batman

Joel Schumacher Says Val Kilmer is the Best BatmanSubmit Comment
IFC caught up with director Joel Schumacher to talk about the Batman franchise, since he directed "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin," which is considered by many to be the worst superhero film.

"For me, Val Kilmer (Batman Forever) was the best Batman," he said. "I thought he looked great in the costume, and I thought he brought a depth to the role. I thought the relationship between Val and Nicole Kidman was very sexy. Jim Carrey, of course, was the perfect Riddler. And then I had the great Tommy Lee Jones and a lot of other great people are in that movie."

Schumacher added: "I think I'm the most envious of Chris Nolan because he got to do 'The Dark Knight' -- and that's the one I begged to do as my second Batman film. I wanted to do a whole other thing, because we had kind of re-invented the franchise with Val as Batman and it was a very young, sexy, and much less expensive movie. We brought in Robin and I wanted to make 'The Dark Knight' desperately, but the studio didn't want that and it's their money and they're my bosses."

Question: Out of Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale, who is the best Batman?

Bale would be considered the best one, hands down, if he would just do something about that damn Batman voice.

Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy. Batman Forever was the worst in the series it was so boring at least Batman and Robin has camp value.

George Clooney and Chris O Donnel ultimate duo

Easily Michael Keaton. Christian Bale could just be anyone I don't see him as owning the character he just plays it and grunts the lines. George Clooney played himself and Val Kilmer wasn't too bad considering the sh*t film and set that surrounded him.

What Joel is saying is basically he had all these talented actors and still managed to turn Batman into a toy franchise... pathetic.

"Kilmer is the best batman"

Really? and that came from a hack who practically killed Batman Franchise before Nolan resurrect it.

Keaton was the best one for sure! It was dark fresh and he looked the most like a beleivable Bruce Wayne just as much as Batman
Val wasn't bad but the story they gave him was horrible
Cloony was just an abortion! End of story!
Bale is a close second it's just the growl he does as Batman bothers me

That's very homosexual of him.

Keaton and Bale are both great. But Keaton didn't bark at Joker like my pitbull.

Kilmer was good.

Clooney never had a chance to play Batman - he acted in a transgender LSD-infected fantasy show entitled "Batman and Robin". He could've been good I think, but didn't have the material.

Christian Bale all the way! The current Batman franchise are the most believable Batmans to date. What makes this series great is that it's realistic (to a certain extent, of course) and gritty. It is because of this realism that Batman's growl is justified, and necessary. You all know that you would easily be able to recognize the familiar voice regardless of that person's concealment. If Batman were to talk normally and nobody were to recognize his voice as being Bruce Wayne's then that would be as stupid as nobody recognizing Clark Kent as Superman when his glasses are removed.

With keaton/Burton they brought a darker tone and a great dramatic story to modernize Batman. It took Batman from a Saturday morning cartoon trype show to an interesting and engaging modern version. Nothing against west it was a different time with different interests. But what they did on screen in 1989 was exactly what fans wanted. Add in a great supporting cast(jack as joker!) And it hit on every note. He'll it started the whole comic book movie movement. Keaton was great, dark and edgy but very charismatic on screen. Great Batman and a good Wayne.
Batman returns brought a great premise with it and keaton was still fantastic in it. Supporting actors were still top notch(loved walken!) What went wrong was Burton, he went wayyyy to far outside the box with the movie at a time when his loyal followers numbered much fewer than now. The story was off, too much exaggeration going on and it turned a lot of people off. Don't forget this movie is the reason Burton does not do sequels anymore.
Than you have forever. Which carried over a lot of what worked and ditched what didn't. It wasn't as dark as buttons but it still had a decent edge to it. Great supporting actors again with future Oscar winners(kidman and Jones) . Even drew barrymore did have fantastic job albeit was basically playing her cokehead self at the time. She playful and sexy which was perfect for that part. Kilmer did a great job as Wayne, pulling off a perfect billionaire buisnessman. I think he also conveyed the intelligence/detective aspects better than the others. He did a good job in the action scenes. He did have some cheesy scenes but I blame that more on the writing than him. Where the movie failed was having wayyyy too much robin and too much
comedy which I think was there to play to the strengths of carey. I think if the story had shifted more dramatic with more Jones and kidman it could have been better. Plus forever had the best batmobile of the series to date. And best batsuit, the one from beginning though not the
crazy one at the end with the but crack.

Batman and robin now was just horrible. Horrible story that basically just reused the same Bruce needs saving from his girlfriend theme. Horrible set design. Horrible batsuits. Worst batmobile ever, can't imagine it sold many toys of that one. Terrible cast. George clooney was going through the motions it seemed like knowing it would be crap. If only Arnold was not aloud to talk he could have saved himself in this one and just had done the action scenes. It was cheese all over. Its really bad if the butler supporting actor has all of the acting talent highlight reels.
vincere01 writes:

Phone wouldn't let me finish. Now onto bale. He is a good Batman not great but isn't hurting the movie either. What makes the dark knight the best in the series is the quality. Story is superb, acting even down to the minor characters are top notch. Attention to detail can be huge. It was the firing on all cylinders and hit every note well. At least bale is better than clooney though.

Just think about this for a minute. What if either keaton or kilmer had been young enough to make these??? That would be mind blowing accross the cosmos!
Sorry about the long post. This is my first ever. Long time reader though. Love the comments section, hilarious guys. Thoughts??? Thanks, cheers

vincere01 writes:

The dark knight I mentioned was the 2nd bale movie. Which is widely considered the best in the franchise. I just think it would have been better if a younger kilmer or keaton had the chance to star in it instead of bale. I still like bale too just not as much

SeWerin writes:

Batman Beyond is much better then Dark Knight IMO. Pace is better, character well defined and it had great theme (fear) and editing (except action scenes).

Dark Knight "would" be perfect if it 40 minutes shorter and if Two face survived. The way it is now - it's Joker's roller coaster, and that was forced too much. There practically isn't single memorable scene in Dark Knight that concerns Batman/Wayne regarding personality. He doesn't have brilliance, innocence, humor, sadness - nothing, he just stands there. Not to mention that his detective skills are zero to none. That's why he is sucky Batman and Bruce Wayne.

He at least had personality in Begins.
vincere01 writes:
on October 13th, 2011 at 4:31:27 PM

Exactly! Bale is neither a benifets of detractor from the movie. Just there. And for what its worth is it is believed that two face did not die. It looks like he will be brought back somehow kinda like how scarecrow is there again. We will see
