"Spartacus" Star Andy Whitfield Dead at 39

"Spartacus" Star Andy Whitfield Dead at 39Submit Comment
Andy Whitfield, the former star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" series, died on Sunday of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney. He was 39 years old.

Whitfield, who was born in Wales and lived in Australia, was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the title hero in "Spartacus," a hit original series that made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality. The actor was preparing for the second season when he was diagnosed 18 months ago. In January, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role.

"We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in 'Spartacus] and came to know that the man who played a champion onscreen was also a champion in his own life," said the network. "Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans."

Whitfield's wife Vashti in a statement called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife."

@DaveThePhotoGuy....Last week was my first time ever seeing Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and i must say that it was actually a pretty damn good show (loads of violence and sex). I never really wanted to watch it but i was actually surprised by it.

R.I.P. Andy Whitfield. I pulled for you till the very end. I thought you were going to beat this thing and come back to Spartacus in season three. Well at least you found peace finally.

@nuttie30xx
Look I am pretty religious and I get bashed for it sometimes but the way I see it. THose who die get relief. Those who live who have done horrible things must live with the horrors they have committed and suffer at the hands of their fellow man.

A really solid actor, Spartacus was great, and you could tell he was a really cool guy from the BTW in the FreddieW video. Awful for him, even worse for his wife- and sucks for all of us because quality actors and good people are always in short supply... RIP
SACdaddy writes:

Damn shame. Dude was a pretty good actor. I loved him on Spartacus. He really brought an emotional edge to the show that made it better and not just a symphony of sex and violence.
