Warner Bros Developing USS Indianapolis Film

Warner Bros Developing USS Indianapolis FilmSubmit Comment
Warner Bros is developing a new film about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II and the horrifying shark attacks that followed. "The Pacific" writer Robert Schenkkan is penning the script. Robert Downey Jr is producing.

The story will revolve around Hunter Scott, an 11-year-old boy looking for a subject for a national History Day competition. While watching "Jaws," he gets inspired by a scene in which shark hunter Quint recalls the Indianapolis ordeal. That got Scott researching the topic, finding out how the warship was sunk by torpedoes and how for five days its stranded crew was slowly eaten by sharks. Of around 900 men that survived the torpedoes, only about 300 survived the shark attacks.

Scott heard from survivors how the captain, Charles McVay, was unjustly court-martialed, and set out to correct the miscarriage of justice, eventually testifying before Congress. He was eventually instrumental in getting legislation passed in October 2000 to exonerate McVay, who committed suicide in 1968. In July 2001, the US Navy amended his record.

Not a comedy then.

And before people go into some kind of spastic attack....

I am joking.

I remember that part in "Jaws" and it sent a shiver down my spine, so it might be a good movie.

That whole scene where they start to bond together and Shaw ends it with that brilliant Indianapolis story is one of my favourite scenes in any film I've seen, Classic

Based on the book, "In Harm's Way." This was an excellent book. Very sad what happened to those soldiers. Also, very graphic. If you didn't know before, you will learn how damaging salt water is to human beings....a definite read.

Ranger

That is a fair point there my friend, hundreds of thousands of grandfathers died in the war and hollywood have made some wonderful WW2 films over the years.

I think this would be a story worth seeing on the big screen , no matter how tragic the circ*mstances are surrounding the whole ordeal those brave men had to endure.

Rocket -

Always had a soft spot for Jaws 2, not a patch on Jaws but it was one of those i used to watch a lot as a kid.

Shark Night 3D doesn't look to bad either.

This sounds like it could be an extremely great movie. I am looking forward to more details and trails.

They should really do some research before planning a movie based on a common misbelief.

Most of the deaths are attributed to exposure, salt poisoning and thirst, with the dead being dragged off by sharks. Some even killed themselves and/or one another in various states of delirium and hallucinations. Only a small percentage of the men actually got killed by a shark.

@ Trailer - yep, im with you on Jaws 2. Think the comments about keeping the doe eyed kid out of it are right though, dont make it a soppy flash back, i think its a story that deserves to be told well, those guys went through so much sh*t during and after the sharks!

as imthebigdawg mentioned, i seem to remember some guys losing chunks of flesh from being in the water, other guys dying from drinking salt water (PAINFULL way to go!) and then when they got back some of the soldiers in charge got all kinds of bullsh*t blame thrown at them!
