Why Does "The Lone Ranger" Have $275 Million Budget?

Why Does "The Lone Ranger" Have $275 Million Budget?Submit Comment
It was recently reported that Disney dropped "The Lone Ranger," starring Johnny Depp and directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean). The reason was the film's escalating budget, which reached $275 million.

Many wondered why a Western would need such a hefty budget. It turns out that the script, which focuses more on Tonto (Depp), has plenty of werewolves and other supernatural creatures from Native American myths. There are also three massive action scenes, including one described as the biggest train sequence in film history.

THR has learned that the studio is still interested in the project and has asked Verbinski to bring the budget down to $215 million. Both Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have already given up a total of $10 million from their fees, but more cutting is needed. Otherwise the film would have to make $800 million worldwide in order to become profitable.

And since "Cowboys and Aliens" grossed only $92 million worldwide on a $163 million budget, Disney is worried that "The Lone Ranger" will end up being a big loser. But it's willing to gamble and is now waiting for Verbinski to bring the budget down.

SOrry Johny Depp is not good enough to carry a whole western and his costars like Armie Hammer another gay white name aint gonna help

NO matter how much the budget of this movie is it will not be a classic like Good Bad and the Ugly.the budget for that movie was about $1,200,000.nor will it surpass the Korean remake of Good the Bad and the weird.

Just look at Wild Wild West with Will Smith the budget was extremely high and that sh*t flopped badly $170,000,000

Why does the Lone Ranger have a $275 million budget? Cause it's the Lone f*cking Ranger, that's why. Nah, this movie is going to blow, yet another unecessary remake.

depp wanted brad pitt to play Lone Ranger i wouldv definetly seen that sh*t Armie Hammer should go hangout with Blackin d*cker and hi-ho silver up his ass

Johnny Depp's salary probably eats up half of the budget.

There is just no excuse for this film to cost $275 million. I can't believe Cowboys and Aliens cost $160 million. Back in the day, junk like that would have cost $30 million. Hollywood is off the chain.

I don't know and I dont care what verbinski had in his mind, Lone Ranger is a western movie. The budget shouldn't be that big.

Werewolves? Supernatural creatures from Native American myths?

I think Johnny Depp needs to stop hitting the peyote pipe so much and try spending a little time out of the spirit world.

Honestly I wasn't too happy about them bastardizing one of the few fictional American Western icons...But I guess Johnny Depp would have gotten offended if they had asked him to play the main character Cheeta the monkey in the planned Tarzan movie.

"Yes Johnny you'll be playing a chimpanzee that randomly masturbates and throws feces at people, but than again with your knack for immersing yourself in roles, who would better to play the character? And who knows you might have a little chimpanzee in your family that you could tap into."

Even if it was going to be called Tonto and that crazy white guy who thinks that silver bullets makes him a marksman and refuses to tell people his real name, there still wouldn't be much of a reason to go over $100 million, even if you did want to add a couple of cheesy 3D effects hear and there.

Too much placating of Depp's ego in this project. And my suggestion is to kill it. Kill it quick. Kill it before it grows.

"Why does "The Lone Ranger" have (a) $275 million budget?"

Why don't you try going back to school, dumbass?
Preferably kindergarten, since your english sucks.

Anyway, on the topic. Some questions are better left unanswered.Like , why does a lowlife faggot like ranger like three c*cks shoved up his ass?
Plenty of reasons. One being that he was repeatedly violated in his ass as a kid by his daddy.Or maybe his tormentors in his school made him play a game of "sodomy" everyday.Or maybe, he would dress up everyday like a pretty girl to make his daddy happy.

While Jake is trying to be amusing... ugh.

To answer this thread's posed question as to the movies potential budget...

Never work with animals, they are unpredictable and can be difficult to work with (as Jake's Dom has found out the hard way).

Now that your telling us that have werewolves and is focus more in Tonto than the Lone Ranger.... Why the movie is called the Lone Ranger¿? Why¿? Of course, is they are afraid to put the title we result a constantly joke since "Tonto" means stupid in spanish..... It will be funny to go to the theaters ans ask a ticket to watch "Tonto".... f*ck this sh*t. After reading all of this, I hope it never came to fruition. Stop with the supernatural stuff. Enough with the Pirates.... When they will realize it doesn´t have to be supernatural to make it interesting. MF!!!!!!

this could go either way.on one hand you have Depp which is money in the bank and on the other hand you have the western problem which usually ends with a flop.they should drop the project and do something else with depp, not a western.

I hope they do make this and I hope it ends up as the biggest BO bomb of all time.

Why do people care about a film budget, have to react on Depp's salary, or even agree/disagree about the fact that a "western should/should not cost that much", that it is "ridiculous"...? Is it your money??? No, it's the studios' money and it's their problems. The only things I care is if a movie is good or not, and if I'll go watch it or not. Period.

Stapes writes:

It it focuses more on Tonto, then what the f*ck is it called the Lone Ranger. Why not just make a movie called Tonto, the way Jet Li did with the Black Mask. Unless of course they're going to try to go for the whole Big Trouble in Little China thing, in which case Verbinski and Depp should suck it.
