Update: Disney Kills Johnny Depp's "The Lone Ranger" Film

Update: Disney Kills Johnny DeppSubmit Comment
Back in 2008, during the Disney showcase in Los Angeles, Johnny Depp came out on stage to "The Lone Ranger" theme song while wearing his Jack Sparrow outfit along with The Lone Ranger mask and gun. At that point, it was revealed that the studio is moving forward with "The Lone Ranger" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which Depp would both star in.

"On Stranger Tides" has already hit theaters, but "The Lone Ranger" has been struggling with casting, story and finding a director. Eventually, Armie Hammer was brought on to play the title role and Gore Verbinski (helmer of first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films) signed on to direct. The studio even planned to begin filming in the fall for a December 21st, 2012 release.

But now comes word that Disney has officially killed the project due to budget concerns. This is very similar to what happened with "On Stranger Tides," when Disney told producer Jerry Bruckheimer to cut $100 million out of the budget. The studio asked him to cut a substantial amount out of "The Lone Ranger" budget as well, but apparently he refused and so did Verbinski.

Meanwhile, Disney is worried that a Western may not be able to earn back a massive budget and used "Cowboys and Aliens" as an example. Plus, it is currently involved in too many other high-budget productions. As a result, the studio, producer and director have not been able to figure out a solution and have decided to just kill the project.

Update: Variety says that Disney is planning to lower the budget to around $200 million and see if it will be possible to make the film.

Cowboys and Aliens is a bad example to base a movies production on. It had sloppy marketing and a sloppy story. And when has a Disney movie with Depp ever done poorly at the box office (Alice in Wonderland, POTC)? Highly suspect this is.

Just read:

"Variety is now reporting that Disney still plans to move forward on the project but is in the process of bringing down costs in order to so."

How the hell can you not make a "The Lone Ranger" movie for less than $200mil.

Maybe all the fat cats should cut back on their kickbacks.

Smart move after Cowboys & Aliens.

So if Cowboys and Aliens had been a success, they would have given the green light with the initial budget? I know these guys are supposed to be experts in the movie industry (at least more than I who is just a spectator), but really I don't understand their f*cking logic and reasoning... f*ck you Disney, you don't care about making good movies, all you care about is making more money as if You didn't have enough already

No Western should cost $232 million. That's frakkin ridiculous.

Rambo

Harrison Ford needs to go back and do what he does best Action Thrillers last time he did that was Air Force One nearly 15 years ago.

He's film choices over the past few years have been terrible and very boring.

The last Indy aside his last hit was What Lies Beneth (in 2000), Before that he was box office gold for nearly 20 years.

Not seen Cowboys yet but no doubt i will when it comes out next week, Looks a little like Wild Wild West to me which is a bit uh oh.

^wild wild west is more then uh oh,it's like please god make it stop i had enough with hollywood ;-) but yeah i agree about ford,i didn't even like air force one,his last good movie was 'the fugitive' which was a great thriller-it was downhill from there.Indy 4 sucked.

Yes sir The Fugitive was a great film one of the best TV to Film transfers that has been made IMO.

Witness was another classic too, not so much action but very compelling never the less.

I Dont know why he doesn't make another Jack Ryan film, that has to be better than another reboot thats for sure.

Oh and i watched Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes today.

Very good, It just spent a little too much time in that enclosure i thought i just wanted them to breakout and cause chaos.

Also had a couple of nice links to the original Planet Of The Apes as well.

Soild 7/10 and i hope they make a 2nd part.
Rambo writes:

the only jack ryan movie which was good was 'the hunt for red October',the ford movies were average at best probably because they were lacking a strong director like mctiernan.witness was solid as well as 'frantic'

regarding rise of the planet of the apes - yes it wasn't a perfect movie and had it flaws(thought james franco was a miscast)but considering the budget they did an amazing job.i enjoyed it much more then f*cking harry potter and the transformers crap

regarding rise of the planet

I didn't mind Franco too much (Brain Cox would have worked also i think instead of his smaller role)but he didn't age one bit over the course of 8 or 9 years.

Thought John Lithgow was really good as his dad also.

I Liked Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger both good thrillers, While Phillip Noyce isn't in John McTiernan class he's made some pretty descent movies Dead Calm, Blind Fury and the surprisingly good Salt.
