"30 Minutes or Less" Mocking Real-Life Tragedy?

"30 Minutes or Less" Mocking Real-Life Tragedy?Submit Comment
Back in 2003, a 46-year-old pizza delivery man Brian Wells died when a bomb strapped around his neck exploded after he was forced to rob a bank. Now Columbia Pictures is releasing their "30 Minutes or Less" comedy, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari, and friends and family of Wells are outraged that the studio took a tragic event and turned it into a comedy.

"Doesn't Brian have a right to die? They're blowing something up that should never have even happened in the first place and now they wanna make a joke out it ... it's really tragic," said a friend.

The studio claims that neither the filmmakers or the stars of the film were aware of Wells before getting involved in the film. A representative of the writers added that his clients were vaguely familiar with the events, but the screenplay is based on an original story that does not mirror the real-life tragedy.

And for those who remember the 2003 events, may recall that federal prosecutors alleged that Wells was involved in the plan to rob the bank, but may not have known that a real bomb was strapped to his neck. The bomb eventually exploded while Wells was in handcuffs and news cameras were rolling.

Question: Do you think "30 Minutes or Less" is loosely based on the real-life events?

on another note, just two days ago a girl here in Australia thought she had a bomb strapped to her neck as well (turned out to be a hoax). random coincidence

I can understand the anger among the friends and family of this guy, but aren't most movies/books/series based upon something that actually happened? I don't hear Rodney King bitchin' each time a black guy gets beat up by cops in some random movie.

How many movies & TV shows have done this story? I can personally think of at least a handful. It's not that original of a story anymore and I doubt the one instance is what they're drawing from.

"Do you think "30 Minutes or Less" is loosely based on the real-life events?" -> Noone cares. If we can't make fun of death anymore, what can we laugh about?

Just because it happened to this one specific guy and it was relatively high profile doesn't mean that it hasn't ever happened to other people. Is it inspired by real-life events? Well, yeah, lots of movies are. Every movie about a terrorist attack doesn't have to worry about offending families of 9/11 victims.

This bomb-strapping ploy has been used plenty of times in real life, so who's to say it was based off the one event involving Wells? I've seen it used on various cop shows too like Law & Order or CSI.

Nothing says 'Ha, Ha' funny like a guy exploding into bits on the silver screen. These people oughta lighten the f*ck up! Didn't they see Monty Python's "The Meaning
of Life" and the gluttony scene, where Terry Jone's fatty exploded in the restaurant after eating the mint ?

what do you expect from Hollywood? I'm sure all the big executives sit around and plan carefully not to offend anyone with their movies. It would be tough for the families to have your murdered son, father made into a joke, especially if the retarded Jesse Eisenberg represented him.

(I would be mad if Eisenberg was made to represent someone in my family, even if it wasn't a comedy.

I think the fact that the main character is a pizza deliverer might suggest this was based on Wells. The real mystery here however is how did WP take this long to figure out this movie might be based on something that actually happened.

This isn't news, I've known about this since January. The writers said it was loosely based around the events of Brian Wells from the beginning.
