"Cowboys and Aliens" Can't Beat "The Smurfs" This Weekend

Posted: July 31st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Cowboys and Aliens" CanSubmit Comment
The $163 million "Cowboys and Aliens," which is directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, could not beat Sony's 3D kids film "The Smurfs" at the domestic box office. Both movies tied for first place with $36.2 million.

The studio hoped that "Cowboys" would end up grossing $45 million during its opening weekend, but that didn't happen likely due to so many negative reviews of the film. But now that it is rolling out in foreign territories, it still has a chance of becoming profitable.

The other wide release of the weekend was "Crazy, Stupid, Love," which grossed $19.3 million and landed in 5th place.

In related news, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" has now crossed the $1 billion mark. The only "Harry Potter" installment to have done this. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is also reaching the milestone. It has now grossed $983 million and will likely reach $1 billion within a week.

I don't know who to blame for Iron Man 2? Jon Favreau or Marvel?

With Pirates 4 hitting that milestone also,I guess getting to a Billion dollars at the w/w boxoffice isn't such the achievement it once was.

I had a feeling this cowboy movie would be crap. Although I was hoping it would be good

I was hoping to watch a great summer movie theyve all been subpar this year

Heck Pirates has been the best one this summer
and I thought after a 4th one it would be worse than Captain Communist

Maybe Co-Nads will be the surprise of the year

But I have a feeling this movie will focus more on close up camera shots of swords decapitating something instead of a decent story

I can hardly believe Cowboys and Aliens couldn't beat such a stupid movie as The Smurfs... Time to retire Favreau, your Iron Man 2 was below average and now this...

Fast five thousand wasnt bad. Would have been really good if they would have thought of something other than pulling that safe

So quick to turn on Favreau, goddamn! And how come no mention of Captain America taking a huge dive?

Come on, that's only because c*nts brought their children to see it.

Damn, Captain America isn't even in the top five. Just wondering, does anyone think Deathly Hallows Part 2 has any chance of getting to $2 billion? Sure, it's a milestone that's pretty far away still, but with the way the movie's been doing, I'd say it has a fighting chance.

I saw Cowboys yesterday in theaters and while it had absolutely nothing new to offer, it also wasn't exactly bad either. A well made bland picture.

@secondbest -Captain was third.

^^^

I was just about to say that, it it clearly in third, it's still doing okay. It opened up in 23 foreign markets $53 mil., movie's gonna do fine.

@Cyber

Rumor has it that Marvel is to blame - they wanted the movie to be done as quickly as possible, so Favreau didn't have enough time to polish it they way he did with the first part. That's also said to be the reason why he declined to direct Iron Man 3 despite a pay raise.

@second

Won't happen. They way it's going it'll stop at $1.4 bil. tops. Still a huge amount of money. Too bad Return of the King will be out of the Royal Trinity.

These days Transformers is a Billion+ movie. Cinema is in decay.

I don't think it will make $2 billion at all. The movie made a steep drop in its second week, and it seems like every week the cash just keeps coming in slower and slower... But I do feel that it will make in between $1 & $2 billion, maybe a little over half.

Iron Man was defiantly a one hit wonder for you Favreau.

Not having seen it, I can't speak to the quality of Cowboys and Aliens, but it is a pretty out there concept that might just not have that broad of appeal. As for Favrou being a one hit wonder with Iron Man... regardless of what anyone thinks of the sequel (which I actually liked) it made a boatload of money, which h would indeed make it a hit, and had a hit or 2 prior to Iron Man, Elf coming immediately to mind.
Eben1277 writes:

I'd say Swingers too, but while it was profitable and popular, I'm not certain it qualifies as a hit.

Daniel Craig and Harrison ford have flopped in all their movies in recent years except bond and IJ4.so what did the producers expect when they casted them?
Cinemaisdead writes:

Trailer- Seems the way to make that much money is to make a sequel of a sequel of a sequel, get all the zombies hungry with trailers showing the best bits and charge them a sh*t load for 3D. BOOM

So ... this is the summer of mass marketing, bad 80's songs remixes and tons of snotty, loud children in the theater.

f*ck the smurfs I still wanna see cowboys and aliens and I'm tired of people talking sh*t about iron man 2 it was a cool movie.
