"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" Shatters Box Office Records

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" Shatters Box Office RecordsSubmit Comment
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the last installment in the franchise, grossed a massive $476 million in its worldwide debut. This is by far the best opening ever. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" was the previous record holder with $394 million.

"Deathly Hallows: Part 2" took $168.6 million domestically, beating "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million) to earn the biggest opening weekend ever. This is on top of having the largest opening day ever (Friday with $92.1 million).

"The phenomenal result is a true testament to the universal and timeless appeal of JK Rowling's beloved books. Whether in German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese or any other language, fans everywhere have embraced the finale," said Warner Bros.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" had to settle for second place at the box office. The film grossed another $21 million for a worldwide total of $762.8 million.

The other new film of the weekend was "Winnie the Pooh," which settled for sixth place with $8 million. The film cost $30 million to make, which means that it will struggle to make its budget back.

without the expensive 3D tickets 'The Dark Knight' is still number 1.

It deserves it. One of the best franchises ever.

Can't believe how much money Rowling is making right now...

Yup take out the 3D sales and modify it for normal ticket sales and we'll see how well it done.

The movie definitely deserved such a big opening. It truly was a great film and the best in the series.

Saw it this Saturday and enjoyed it quite a bit. Saw Horrible Bosses too and had a blast. Jennifer Aniston looks better as a brunette IMO.

@Rambo: According to BoxOfficeMojo, most folks wanted to see Deathly Hallows part 2 in 2D. So in a way it beat TDK even if you take away the 3D sales.

Suck on that Dark Knight and Twilight!! HP all the way!

dark knight is better then this sh*t. however i do admit the trailer was pretty wicked.

Actually yeah, with the 3-D inflation, I am surprised it didnt earn more.

It barely passed by the dark knight, which had no 3-d at all. So I am not too impressed.

However, the foreign box-office will be a monster in the weeks to come.
Avirex writes:

Even regular 2D tickets prices have increased in the last three years, that in addition to these new 3D tickets and this flick would have earned less than both TDK and SM3.

its truly an amazing end to the franchise though its all thanks to 3D,would even be much better if it reachd the billion mark, thats an achievement ryt thr.

This cycle is never going to end. It seems most films now have bloated budgets in order to make even more money.

The studios are spending $250 million to make $500 million. Soon it's going to be $500 million to make a billion and so on and so forth.

I never understood the fascination with 3D. I made the mistake of seeing Avatar in 3D and I barely recognized the difference, except my eyes hurt afterwards.

Rambo is, indeed, correct.

Crazyhorse writes:

I bet James Cameron is worried

He might drop Ava-tard and try to come up with something else if Harry Pothead beats his movie

@CH

Agree. Although I think HP will finish up short from breaking Avatar's record.

You know who the real wizards are? The WB studio accountants that will take a film franchise that cost about $1.2 billion to produce, yet has earned well north of $6.5 billion in ticket sales globally, and show it to be a money losing venture. LOL

If there is a god, this will over take "Avatar" as the number 1 film of all time.
Bunny X writes:

Makes sense. One of the most beloved franchises in movie history. And they were smart in taking the last film and setting it up as a two-parter. It's a built in cliff hanger with part one fresh in everyone's minds as of last year as well as the release of the DVD earlier.
Eben1277 writes:

I can't speak to what percentage of ticket sales were 3D, or how IMAX sales affected things, or the price of ticket inflation, but I can say that it was certainly a better movie than the over-rated Dark Knight. Dark Knight had good moments, and by no means would I call it a bad movie, but it definitely doesn't deserve to be crotch ridden the way it is.
