Spike Lee Confirmed to Direct "Oldboy" Remake and Maybe "Do The Right Thing" Spin-Off

Spike Lee Confirmed to Direct "Oldboy" Remake and Maybe "Do The Right Thing" Spin-OffSubmit Comment
A few days ago, we learned that Spike Lee (Inside Man, Do the Right Thing) was in talks to direct a remake of Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy," which originally had Steven Spielberg and Will Smith attached before falling apart due to rights issues.

Mandate Pictures has now confirmed that Lee has officially signed on to helm from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend), who will also produce. "It's a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director," Mandate said of Lee.

Plot: With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years - and no one to hold accountable for his suffering a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors, relying on assistance from a friendly waitress.

In related news, Lee tweeted this morning that he's starting production a new film. He wrote: "On the way to the set of THE NEW SPIKE LEE JOINT. Today is 1st Day of Shooting."

He can't be talking about "Oldboy," since the remake has yet to get a cast. BlackFilm believes the film is "Red Hook Summer," which is about an adult from Atlanta who comes to spend the summer in Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY. Lee will also star in the film as Mookie, the character he played over twenty years ago in "Do the Right Thing."

WHY THE f*ck ARE THEY REMAKING THIS MOVIE? Why is it so difficult for people just to read subtitles? These movies should remain in their awesome original instead of becoming watered down action flicks for american audiences.

Maybe they will stick closer to the comic, which the original movie took some liberties with. Either way, they will have a hard time trying to measure up to the original and I really don't think the source material is suitable for a mainstream audience.

Do The Right Thing and abandon the project Spike. My inside man in the movie business Malcolm has an X called Sarah who has seen the script and was bamboozled as to why they were remaking it. She's a bit of a klepto like that when she sees something she's gotta have it so she fled the set and got on the bus.

The thing about Spike is he got game but must be catching jungle fever in his old age no longer in his superior school daze. On the 25th hour of each day he turns back all the clockers and pretends he's still good when he's just a freak!

Spike Lee can do good movies (Inside Man was great IMO). But I'll boycott that remake which I finds utterly useless. The original korean movie is a masterpiece. You want to see Old Boy? Just watch Park Chan Wook's old Boy! Period.
