"Mass Effect" Video Game Movie to Unveil Details at Comic-Con

Posted: July 7th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Mass Effect" Video Game Movie to Unveil Details at Comic-ConSubmit Comment
In May of last year, Legendary Pictures (The Dark Knight) announced that it picked up rights to "Mass Effect," the Electronic Arts-Bioware video game. "I Am Legend" writer Mark Protosevich was on board to write the script and Warner Bros was set to distribute.

Now comes word that Legendary will have a "Mass Effect" panel during the San Diego Comic-Con with Protosevich and Bioware's Casey Hudson on hand to talk about the film. The panel will take place on July 22nd.

"Mass Effect" takes place in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy who leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life.

boring news

The games are fantastic, but I can't say that a movie is the best idea. How can they possibly choose from all the decisions that gamers can make while playing? I know that Bioware keeps track of the most popular decisions made via xbox live and PSN, so maybe that's the route they're going with?

On top of that, this is a 40+ hour game. They'd almost need to split it up into two movies for each game to fit in even the important parts of the plot.

This has enormous potential if done right, and if Bioware makes a lot of the decisions. The director is also going to be key, as always...

I sure hope they will feature the planet-scanning.
coolguy writes:

^lol Freudian

This movie is pointless, the games are popular and successful for their cinematic approach (among other things). A film would just ruin the story.

f*ck you hollywood

Haven't played the game is it any good?

Adamtheflash- Stop being so negative you hypocrite! This film is going to be good no matter what remember?

As long as he f*cks an alien, i'll be happy.

Not gonna happen.
coldplayesence writes:

Well at least that's what I'm praying for.
Anung_un_rama writes:

I remember reading that it wasn't going to be about Commander Shepard, but about the first contact war that happens before the games.

either way the chalange is the buget and time to make this movie. The set production and the aliens have to look awesome. I hope they use a blend of CGI and makeup so they avoid what happened with that Green Lantern abortion, of only using green screen.

If you haven not played the games yet play them its worth it.
Adamtheflash writes:

Oh poor cinemaisdead...did I hurt your feelings the other day? Is your poor ego so tarnished that you have to make a weak attempt to come at me again? Idiot...

And yes the games are great, to answer your question. Some of the best I've ever played.
Cinemaisdead writes:

Adamtheflash- Haha no it just makes me laugh that you referenced me specifically when I really couldn't care less. I come on here at work to have a moan about the current state of affairs of movies because I love them and I want film makers to start caring more about their audiences and taking more risks. I'm not gonna try to make everything seem good or stop commenting because the movies look sh*t. I liked the first Transformers for what it was a fun film it's just when Bay tried pretending to be serious in that brain f*ck T2 it just pisses me off that they spend that much money on that film when they could make 100 amazing low budget films.

If the games are great maybe they should be left alone as well games are another medium that brings the audience into the experience and puts them in control, they should just be left as that.
Cinemaisdead writes:

It's this comment Adam: "I posted the comment I did to prove a point, and idiots like cinemaisdead didn't disappoint. I laugh at how he has such a negative view of the industry, but he constantly posts on a website devoted to movies. Then if someone says something he doesn't agree with, he whips out his "big boy" language. He is the "end all be all" of movies apparently."

I never have a go at some one I don't agree with I encourage people to have their own opinions just be ready to back them up, the comment section is for debates on films among other things is it not? So why call me an idiot? It's just rude and pretty negative in itself. I come on here when I'm at work bored because I like films if a film looks good I'll say it but I'm not gonna be a little bitch and say I'll give it a chance because Hollywood is just a money making machine. Grow a pair of nuts and either don't read my comments or find a homosexual alternative to this site where every one gets along.
Adamtheflash writes:
on July 7th, 2011 at 11:57:51 AM

If you couldn't care less, you wouldn't have come at me again in the first place. That's the last I'm going to say in the matter because you have truly solidifed yourself as an idiot. Your copy/paste method of trying to insult me is overused and just lame. I'm done fighting with you. Take that for whatever moral victory you need to sleep at night.

I will agree with you however on games as a separate medium, especially ones with the depth of Mass Effect. It would be very difficult to translate to film. Maybe the game industry should be left alone?
Nekros22 writes:

Woop-dee-doo.

Anyone who's played the game knows exactly what's going to happen. The fun was in playing the game and learning the story for yourself, not sitting around for 3 or 4 hours waiting for it to be told to you.

I suspect this will turn out like the whole "Halo Movie" fiasco. It won't happen.
rabid writes:

A Mass Effect film? It couldn't begin to capture the depth of the entire game, but I'm okay with short side stories that take place at different times in the game, like they've done with the expansion games and the comic books.
A tv series would work better, but the fx budget would be nauseating compared to visual treats the game spoils us with.
Cinemaisdead writes:

Oh come on Adam read what I'm saying please I couldn't care less about how you perceive me on this site you're saying it's an ego thing. I just wanna know why you feel the need to mention me by name just skip my comments if you don't like what I'm saying it's not hard. I'm not having a go I just hate rude people and people who try to tell other people how to think. You seem to have a problem with me commenting on here unless I say something positive that was the initial thing yeah?

I rarely ever copy and paste what people say on here either so I don't know how this is overused I was just showing you why I was having a go. I'm not an idiot I just love a good moan about something I'm quite passionate about films. So let me get on with it please. Cheers.
Cinemaisdead writes:

And yeah leave games alone they have never worked and never will.
Crazyhorse writes:

Hey why not

at least this is something new instead of another remake of Saw 18, Halloween 14, or another Shia la douche film

Put Jason Stathum and Scarlett Johanson and I'll be there to watch
minkowski writes:

It won't work is right. They'll kick the script down to some fledgling writer with no appreciation for the games, throw in some Paul Anderson clone and toss up just enough money to get the film made but not enough to do the material any justice, just precisely enough to keep the film from becoming a likely liability.
SuluNakamura writes:

As much as this news excites me, it worries me as well. I'd hate for my favorite video game series to take a dumbed-down blow to the stomach, as nearly all video game movie adaptations have done.
Adamtheflash writes:
on July 8th, 2011 at 1:18:49 AM

Fair enough Cinema. Again, I'm tired of having this conversation, and no one really needs your life story. I will concede. You can go ahead and believe that I started the whole thing directed at you. Cheers
Adamtheflash writes:
on July 8th, 2011 at 1:20:18 AM

I'm with Nekros on this one...it probably won't get made like Halo.
Cinemaisdead writes:

Life story? What are you talking about nowhere in my comment did I mention any thing about my life I was just explaining to you why I felt the need to comment back to you or "come at you" as you keep worryingly referring to it as. For some one calling people stupid you're not doing yourself any favours pal.
