"Cars 2" Takes First Place with $68 Million This WeekendSubmit Comment
"Cars 2" is the first negatively-reviewed Pixar film, but it's still doing very well at the box office. Over the weekend, the sequel grossed $68 million domestically and another $42.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of almost $111 million. The film cost $200 million to make, so it's definitely on its way to become a hit. This is Pixar's 12th No. 1 opening.

"I think there is this wonderful aura that comes with Disney/Pixar movies. They play almost like fanboy pics. Everyone rushes out Friday to see them," said Disney.

The other wide opening of the weekend was Cameron Diaz's "Bad Teacher" R-rated comedy, which took second place with $31 million. Produced for only $20 million, the film has already made its money back. Plus, it earned another $13 million internationally.

"Green Lantern" fell a steep 66% in its second weekend, grossing only $18.4 million for a new worldwide total of $118 million. Since the film cost $200 million to make, it will be a while before it becomes profitable.

"it will be a while before it becomes profitable."

I, uh, looked up the word 'awhile' in the dictionary, alex, and nowhere did I see that it's a synonym for 'never'.

I don't understand...how come animated films makes more money than the movie with real people

Sorry, I just hated like hell Cars, and I hate the idea that Disney has their hand so far up Pixar's ass. You just know like hell they would have never made this film if it wasn't for the parent company telling them to do so.

But hey, Pixar allowed Diney to buy them, so this is one good ding in Pixar's otherwise perfect and stellar film reputation.

Guess the money was right.

About 40% of it's intake was from 3D ticket sales, which means 3D keeps shrinking... DIE 3D!

Wonder what Transformers 3 will do next weekend in ticket sales?

Yeah it's cause when kids go see these movies they bring the whole family even when the parents say no they cry and stomp around till they get there way. That's how animated films that don't deserve the cash still get it

for a pixar movie, 68 mil is average- nothing special. TS3, Nemo, Incredibles and Up! all had bigger takes and put more asses in the theaters. so this opening is nothing special, and it shouldn't be, for such a mediocre movie. i had a lot more respect for lassiter before he decided to do this. this is a quitessential sellout move... i mean, those dudes at pixar make boatloads of cash anyway, did he really need the money? did he somehow convince himself that he did Cars2 to fulfill some new artistic benchmark? sad.
SACdaddy writes:

How the hell did Cars 2 cost $200 mill to make? I'm 99% sure these animation studios are laundering money for Mexican drug cartels or the Mob.

John Lassiter didn't have a choice in making Cars 2, really, because part of the Disney buyout deal was that Pixar would make essentially sequels on demand, so blame Pixar for allowing themselves to be bought by Disney, but they had to whore themselves out to someone I think in order to get the cash to make the films they wanted to make. Cars 2 is just blood money to the devil.

@minkowski

... just like Swai's/Watson's dad and a condom. With a leaky hole. Used twice. Inside out. After falling into a loo full of turds. Turds that look, ironically, like Swai's/Watson's baby photos. From the abortion clinic. Too bad that the coat hanger only poked out one eye though.
mustardayonnaise writes:

@mink- as much as I want to believe that Lassiter was 'forced' to do Cars2, I have a really hard time buying that. the guy is head of animation at disney- Bob Iger is the only guy above him. i would bet that lassiter has enough creative pull to call the shots and let iger do the more nuts and bolts stuff, but of course that's just speculation. whatever the reasons, it still is pretty pathetic.

another thing that will be interesting to follow is Pixar's vancouver studios. soon enough they're gonna bear the brunt of all the (potentially disappointing) sequels that come through the pipeline at pixar. i think that it's not only gonna affect the story quality but the visual quality too- these guys are getting too big and taking on too much.

Not a great opening at all...Pixar got lucky..as soon as people realise it is sh*t..the money will dry up...let's see what the next Pixar movie does...hopefully this will have a knock on effect and f*ck up Disney and Pixar.
