James Spader in Talks to Play Dunder Mifflin CEO on "The Office"Submit Comment
James Spader is in negotiations with NBC to join "The Office" next fall, but not simply as Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) replacement.

Producers want the actor to become the CEO of Dunder Mifflin, replacing Kathy Bates, who will exit the show to focus on season 2 of "Harry's Law."

While Bates was a guest star in the series, Spader will have a significant weekly presence. The actor's deal is not finalized yet, but everything goes as planned, his character - Robert California - will be introduced in the premiere as the new office manager.

California decides the role is too small for him, and somehow talks corporate into appointing him as its new CEO. He will have a strong impact on the rest of the office staff.

Television is where old actors go to die and young actors are born. For the old fat ones, it's second tier at best. So Bando is correct: he's a washed-up *movie* star.

I would disagree just because I think TV has grown into an art form to be respected as much as cinema (you have to look in the right places as with films however). TV gives people the opportunity to develop characters, storylines, and environments. What makes "The Godfather" more legitimate than "The Wire", for example? I definitely don't consider it a place for washed up actors.

And if we're going to get that technical, Bando never specified washed up "movie" actor.

Spader had another chance at a comeback in 2000.he starred in two movies the Sci-fi by Walter Hill and francis Ford coppola called Supernova which failed miserably only making around 15 million out of a 60 million budget.and the watcher with Keanu Reeves as a serial killer which was short of 5mil from a 33million budget.Two fails and then after that straight to dvd movies.

James spader is a great actor who mostly did small movies.Probably his biggest one was Stargate with Kurt Russel.check out his movies like Secretary,2 days in the Valley,keys to tulsa,Crash,bad influence,less than zero,and even Wolf with jack nicholson.

He's a whiner,he couldnt handle the leading man life and is happy of being a fat f*ck and says that he couldnt handle the attention and the pressure so he went into supporting roles instead.but if u like baldwin then thats you,personally i think his brother the fatter one is a greater actor.

And if you saw the departed please watch the original chinese version called infernal affairs before it was butchered by Scorcese

What can I say.... I´m a Officeholic fan. I like his character and the way he was introduced in The Office season finale.... Definitely it can´t replace Michael´s charisma, but will give a new twist of the show until their cancellation. I give this sitcom only one more year and that´s all. Michael Scott was the soul and body of the show and nobody can replace him.

James Spader joining 'The Office' ? What more can be said of this Brat Pack thespian that hasn't been already spoken by my fellow Previewians, who I humbley respect with such awe and admiration. He has shown, time and time again, that he can pull off smarmy in such a way as can only be done by one other Brat Packian: the late, great cokehead and porn whore, Charles Sheen!
