Matthew Goode is the Lead in "Oldboy" DirectorSubmit Comment
"Oldboy" director Park Chan-Wook has been looking to make an English-language film and has chose "Stoker," written by "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller. Tony and Ridley Scott are producing, and Fox Searchlight is distributing.

Now comes word that the lead will be played by British actor Matthew Goode (Watchmen), who beat out Colin Firth (The King's Speech) and James Franco (127 Hours). Goode will join Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Nicole Kidman.

The new thriller revolves around a teen girl (Wasikowska) mourning the death of her father who then encounters a mysterious uncle she had never met. The uncle will be played by Goode.

Loved Oldboy, this guy's a decent director. The plot could go in any direction, rape, ghosts, ninjas?

I just hope that Park will stay true to his own style and trying to adjust himself to the western format. We don't need to corrupt another promising director.

Would that be ghost raping ninjas?

Yeah or ninja raping ghosts or ghost ninjas due to rape. Either variation is a winner!

Miller is writing? Damned shame. He'd be better in an acting gig, unless of course he's still fat. Loved his role in Prison Break.

No, Goode (good though he is) did not "beat out" Firth. This version is a misreading - unfortunately has been already translated into French and German and displayed on websites - of Variety's (the original source of the news) version. Firth PASSED on stoker (another version: turned down the role). It is then that Goode was cast, instead of several actors the age of Firth. Why Firth passed is anybody's guess, though in a recent interview he said that he would love to play a villain but scripts that have been offered to him of late have roles that are just too two-dimensional. This might apply to the particular case. Whether Firth was right or not is another question, after all he very nearly turned down both Pride and Prejudice and The Single Man, but who knows, playing a villain just for the sake of it if something jars does not seem a good idea either.
