"Asteroids" Movie Gets Director and Plot

"Asteroids" Movie Gets Director and PlotSubmit Comment
About two years ago, Universal Pictures announced that it is developing a big screen version of Atari's hit arcade game "Asteroids." Now comes word that the studio is planning to turn the game into a big-budget space epic by bringing on producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) and hiring director Roland Emmerich (2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day).

Matt Lopez (The Race to Witch Mountain) is writing the script that's said to take place after the destruction of Earth, which means that aliens won. The remnants of human civilization are now living on different colonies within an asteroid belt alongside aliens.

The survivors were led to believe that this alien civilization was benevolent, rescuing them from doom, but ultimately discover that the aliens have engineered Earth's destruction, and soon will do the same for the rest of humankind.

I think I'd prefer a Dig Dug film.

remember when producers said about this movie, 'people say there's no story but we came up with one, it's a story about two brothers...' yea, NOW it sounds closer to a storyline, but honestly it's based off a damn atari game...do they seriously expect us to take it seriously? seriously!...just like whoever it was that posted in the thomas the train engine article, 'a david the gnome movie would be better'...agreed, just like there's better games that can be made into movies...it's the least hollywood can do since all we get 80 percent of the time is remakes now

I suffered from "Asteroids" once...it can be the sequel.

But why? If the aliens destroyed, why hunt us down in an asteriod belt? They freakin' won!

How about a Burger Time movie? Or maybe a Rally X movie? Or maybe even a Crystal Castles movie?

Or how about none of the above? I assume these f*ckin movies make money (likely in Intl' markets), because I have yet to see one become a bonified hit in the states. They all suck. Even Prince of Persia was considered a mild flop, and it was terrible to boot. Video game movies just need to go the f*ck away.

Sounds more like a cross between Battle Star Galattica and Titan AD.

Thought it said 'Steroids', the Arnold Schwarzeneggar movie.

I do love how Alex throws in "...and plot". lol. You know how to manipulate us, don't you, big guy?

But I just don't see Emmerich doing Asteroids. Space Invaders, Missile Command maybe, but there's no cities in space to either freeze or blow up. He's way out of his limited element.

Haha Alex is the puppeteer of all puppeteers! I journeyed back to the early days of Worst Previews and on the early threads there's like 2 people that comment most stories are empty, I bet Alex loves it now he's got so many devoted fans.
