"Poltergeist" Remake is Moving Forward

"Poltergeist" Remake is Moving ForwardSubmit Comment
We recently reported that MGM has been planning to reboot Steven Spielberg's 1982 horror film "Poltergeist." NY Mag has now learned that the studio has approached the Pulitzer-prize winning playwright/screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire (Oz: The Great and Powerful, Rabbit Hole) to write a new version of the paranormal classic.

Lindsay-Abaire confirmed the offer to the magazine, but said that he has yet to decided if he wants to take the job. Back in 2008, the studio brought on "Boogeyman" writing team of Stiles White and Juliet Showden for the remake. And the fact that MGM has now approached Lindsay-Abaire, shows that the plan is to come up with a more clever and highbrow version.

The original story revolves around a young family who are visited by ghosts in their home. At first the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorize the family before they "kidnap" the youngest daughter.

So paranormal activity wasn't enough for some people then?

Why are there so many remakes? Every time I come here now there is a remake or reboot.

Cho blud claat inuf is inuf now man.

Jesus christ how many sequels and remakes is Hollywood churing out right now.

I bet if you pitched an original idea in Hollywood right now they would tell you to get lost ...

It's a sh*tty economy. Financers want investments that have proven track records.

So they go back time thirty years to remake a film that was only moderately successful? Bullsh*t. It's about greed and a lack of ideas and if the economy heated up tomorrow they would just sign off on even more reboots and sequels.

Half these films actually are original scripts, with a name like "Poltergeist" or "Total Recall" tacked on for reasons of brand recognition.
The Teen Wolf remake on MTV for instance began as a Twilight-influenced werewolf story, and then execs stumbled on the right way to publicize it and get a wider audience watching. And it worked. A huge number of viewers tuned in Sunday to watch the pilot who would have never bothered otherwise. Even people my age were tuning in out of nostalgia for the original, which it has no connection to.
Chances are this Poltergeist story was just another random ghost story script they kept passing over before.

The point, Rabid, is that they're recycling old *ideas*, not specific films, scene by scene.

Anyway, I leave you with a quote, Rabid:

Andy Dufresne: How can you be so obtuse?

Warden Samuel Norton: What? What did you call me?

Andy Dufresne: Obtuse. Is it deliberate?

(hint: I'm Andy)

"Chances are this Poltergeist story was just another random ghost story script they kept passing over before."

Because studios make films from random scripst they keep passing over, and they often rename these random passed-over scripts with titles from highly recognizable films.

"Hey look, it's a script about a guy in a videogamme who can do martial arts. We passed the script over like six times, but hey, this time for some reason it looks good. I think we'll call it 'The Matrix'."

Original '82 Poltergeist = CLASSIC! The clown scene alone was worth the price of the ticket.

Doesn't need to be remade (nor did any of its sequels or the TV show... same can be said for RoboCop).

F*ck off Hollywood!

@ minkowski
And sometimes it works. That's all the Wachowskis did with The Matrix. They took a failed tv show and rebranded it, and the second time around it worked better.
Canadian TV repurposed Total Recall into a realy good science fiction detective series that was really just an excuse to showcase homages to other Philip K. d*ck plots.
Brian DePalma took a script about cops and Cubans and reshaped it into a remake of Howard Hughe's Scarface.
I'll at least give it a viewing before I sh*t on it. It could end up being one of the few that surpasses the original, or even tells a different story entirely. Maybe the old ghost reverend and the midget psychic had Polter-babies that reanimate Heather O'Rourke's corpse to threaten Craig T. Nelson in his nursing home? Who knows.

Hey, Trailer - You're so right, but further, I'd say if you tried to pitch an idea, they would tell you to get lost, and then go STEAL it!! Though, truth is, nothing is REALLY that new. At least very few things...
