"X-Men: First Class" Takes First Place with $56 Million

"X-Men: First Class" Takes First Place with $56 MillionSubmit Comment
"X-Men: First Class" hit theaters this weekend and went on to gross $56 million at the domestic box office. The film took another $64 million overseas for a weekend total of $120 million. "First Class" cost $160 million to make.

"First Class" performed as well as the first "X-Men" film did back in 2000, but much worse than "X2" ($85 million), "X-Men: The Last Stand" ($102 million) and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" ($85 million).

"I think it is incredibly challenging to re-launch a franchise," said 20th Century Fox. "There are preconceived ideas, as well as a comfort factor with continuity. We have met and conquered those challenges."

Meanwhile, "The Hangover Part II" had to settle for second place with another $32 million, bringing its worldwide total to $338 million.

"Kung Fu Panda 2" took third place with another $24 million. The sequel has now grossed $225 million in worldwide ticket sales on a $150 million budget.

And "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" landed in fourth place with $18 million, but is continuing to perform well overseas. The film's worldwide total now stands at $790 million.

800 million and more for Pirates. Well, good for Disney, but christ on a crutch what the hell do they do with all their revenue?

That's pretty weak.it pretty much tied with Singers masterpiece, and it didn't even surpass Wolverine or the last stand.

Tree of life didn't even make a million

@mink...... most o their money goes into digitally removing the jonas brothers's boners from their concert videos. very costly affair

this is what happens when the last two films of the franchise are total sh*t,people lose interest, still im hoping this movie does well

Tree of Life not making America as much as it is being on 20 screens. For the record it did pretty well for being in limited release (31,000 per screen).

Also it isn't exactly raking in the bucks overseas.

I did tt.

Blew my f*cking mind. Absolute brilliance.

Putzman is a complete f*ck tard.

Xmen was pretty good. Although the first half blew the second half away. It was a lot smarter than most marvel incarnations. Kevin bacon was easily the best part of the film. Azazel was also pretty bad ass. Lackluster ending though.

worth seeing, not nearly as good as the fan boys claim. Hard to suspend disbelief with a tale so tall. Parts came off as goofy. Much the same as the previous instalments. What first class had that the others didn't. Great performances from the entire cast.

$56 million isn't a weak opening when you consider:

-There are no movie stars in this.

-The last two X-Men films sucked.

I flipped this in the "waht did you think?" thread but I'll repeat some here. The movie was good. I agree Bacon is just tops. And Fassbender was great as well. So seeing them two face off was definitely a plus. So not living up to the hype so many put on this film but it also doesn't fall flat.
I agree, it is smarter than the other Xmen films but then it tries to be too smart by trying to force us to believe certain aspects which outsiders may scratch their heads and insiders who understand the entire Xmen lore just baffled.
That kills me about book / comic movie translations, they insist on changing things so much from the original material and there's truly no need to. You don't have to age / de-age or screw up character's timelines to make your movie.

You do if accurate timelines would make all your popular characters geriatric. Seems to me Havok and Cyclops and company are in the timeline they started in the comics. Considering Alex Summers was introduced 42 years ago... he looks about the right age in the film.
But it's pretty useless to take superhero timelines literally. It's hard to explain how Punisher did two tours in Nam but doesn't have a strand of grey hair, or how Iron Man built his armor in the midst of the Korean War.
Bunny X writes:

I can understand diverging from the timelines in comics but diverging from the timeline in your own movie franchise is just ridiculous. Didn't we last see Emma Frost being rescued from the military installation at the end of Wolverine? But she's in First Class much older than she was depicted in Wolverine. And wasn't it also in Wolverine that we see a teenaged Scott Summers but in First Class, his so-called older brother is certainly over 18 back in 1962. But 1/2 the problem is the Wolverine movie, the other 1/2 is that the producers continue to have it exist and stand firmly behind cramming it into the Xmen franchise when it so horribly doesn't fit. I mean if we watch Wolverine and then the 1st Xmen movie, we are to somehow believe that these two hated brothers Wolverine and Sabertooth no longer even know each other.
But then even comparing 1st Class to the Xmen movies, there's no acknowledgement between Xavier and Mystique nor Beast and Mystique.
I hate to come off like such a fangirl, but they have an amazing franchise opportunity on their hands and they truly pissed all over it. Just bothers me.

There are a hundred ways to easily explain that using stories from the comics. Weapon X made hundreds of clones of Emma Frost. Splitting Cyclops' and Havok's age doesn't change anything. They still never meet until they are adults.
The script for X1 had dialogue in it that let you know that Wolverine and Sabretooth knew each other (though Wolverine couldn't recall how). That dialogue was cut from the final film, but it doesn't really remove anything from continuity.
