We recently reported that Disney filed a trademark for the term "SEAL Team 6," which is the counter-terrorism group that killed Osama Bin Laden. The trademark was to be used for sale of merchandise and development of a TV show.
The Navy fought back and filed their own trademark for "SEAL Team 6" a few days later. Now comes word that Disney has pulled their application from the US Patent and Trademark Office in order to let the Navy get the trademark.
"Putting a trademark on SEAL Team 6 is like copyrighting 'The guys who stormed the beach at Normandy,'" joked Jon Stewart. "It belongs to all of us."
Navy officers privately expressed relief that the Disney had chosen voluntarily to retract its application, saving the organization from a long trademark battle. "We are fully committed to protecting our trademark rights," said the Navy.
Since Disney was already in the early stages of developing their TV show, the company will likely be forced to cancel it. But if you want to get an idea of what the series would have been like, "The Tonight Show" has a clip. Watch it below.
And what's with the video Alex? Is that the gay version of the original Star Trek crew? Why didn't the no-name red shirted guy get killed? Where's the token black crewman everyone avoids? And I didn't see the yellow-shirted guy tell the blue-shirted guy to 'beam him up', which in this case, with this particular video, would mean a proctological exam with his 'tricorder'.
Ever notice that Star Trek HQ is in San Francisco, btw? You know Sulu just LOVES shore leave.

I won't watch that video for two reasons:
1) It's from Jay Leno
2) It has a logo for MySpace next to "Hulu"
