"Akira" Loses Star and Director

"Akira" Loses Star and DirectorSubmit Comment
Things were going so well for Warner Bros big screen adaptation of "Akira" graphic novel. Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) was set to helm and Keanu Reeves was in talks to star.

The plan was to use Reeves to attract other A-listers to this $100 million film. Unfortunately, Reeves turned down the offer and now comes word that Hughes dropped out as well.

Deadline says that there were serious creative differences between Hughes and the studio, which will move Hughes to another project while keeping "Akira" on a fast track. A director will likely be found soon.

And regarding actors, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy were given the script for the role of Tetsuo, and Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix were courted for Kaneda.

Because characters in their teens should always be played by actors in their late 20s and early 30s.

This isn't a bad thing, WP. Not for fans of film and decency.

Now they will just hire the director who will be the cheapest. I don't want to be a pre-judgemental bastard (well...) but this as no chance of ever coming out on top.

@secondbest - That's because teens can't act. I don't want the Suite Life twins or Daniel Radcliffe in this. Besides, most of those actors look really young. Also, almost all teen roles are given to 18+ for logistic reasons. If they're under 18 you need an on set tutor as well as dealing with their parents.

They could at least try for people in their early 20s instead of actors who are 25+. I get they're trying to have a well-known cast but getting some new blood in there wouldn't be such a bad thing.

At least there are some people in Hollywood that come to their senses.

Ok, Skyline cost like $10 mill to make (grossed $67m) and District 9 cost $30m (grossed $210m). The technology is obviously available now to make awesome effects for peanuts, so why does Akira need $100m and some big name to get going. The original already has a HUGE following and people have been wanting to make a live action version for years. Why is it so hard to put this together? The Hwood mentality is the only thing stopping this from happening. Bigger, Whiter, Dumber is all we get from Hwood these days. Dump the Asians, change the setting and the theme, get me Keanu Reeves, and it must cost $100m. Who the f*ck came up with this sh*t?!?! Here's a solution: keep the young cast (they usually come cheap), get a creative visual director/CGI studio (like Synder or the Strause Bros.) who can supply great effects for chump change, and don't f*ck with the story. This film can be done for $70m or less, and if the studio is worried about an Asian cast not drawing a big crowd at the box office, just make the futuristic setting more like Blade Runner where the Asians had taken over America so you could still sprinkle some white folks on it. It ain't that f*cking hard!
