"Seinfeld" Writer Hired for "Fletch" RebootPosted: May 20th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
|
  David Mandel ("Seinfeld," "SNL") is in negotiations to write the script for Warner Bros' upcoming "Fletch" reboot, based on the mystery novels by Gregory McDonald.
Plot details have yet to be revealed, but producers are hoping to make a smart action comedy that's bigger in size than the previous Chevy Chase movies. The project is a high priority for the studio, which is already searching for an A-list actor to star.
The 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives.
A "Fletch" reboot has been in the works for years. At different stages, actors like Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Zach Braff and Joshua Jackson were considered for the lead, while Kevin Smith, Bill Lawrence and Steve Pink were in talks to direct.

Does anyone else here smell a franchise treatment?

I smell something mink...but I don't think it is a franchise.
Just hope they stay true to the books and not go all PC with it.

Will Farrell would be atrocious as Fletch. Jason Lee or Ryan Reynolds would be way better.

@minkowski
If they do what Kevin Smith wanted to do when he was still attached by name to the project and do Fletch Won, rather than Fletch or Fletch Lives, yeah, obviously ....
and anyone that writes for Seinfeld can handle off the cuff humor that has a rather highbrow slant, then yeah, it would be cool ... due to McDonald's take on Irwin being acerbic, sarcastic and acidic on his flip-off to the status quo, while underlining a brilliant one-step-ahead intelligence that even makes his editor admit, " Hey, this Jane Doe isn't necessarily a f*ckup " ...
I admit to being a fan of the first movie, moreso than Fletch Lives. Geena Davis and Chevy played off each other excellently and his repoirte with the actor that played the editor (and also the divorce attorney he tried to avoid like the plague) was classic.
It was classic Chevy.
If they had anyone to try out for Fletch, I would nominate Bill Hader. He would be awesome.

@LastActionHero
I would agree with you on Ryan after Van Wilder. But now, after his work in Buried or Green Lantern, he should broaden his career to go for roles that don't rely for him to mug and set the jokes on auto-pilot.

I can see why.
Dirty Work was perfect for him.
