Keanu Reeves in Talks for Live-Action "Akira" Film

Keanu Reeves in Talks for Live-Action "Akira" FilmSubmit Comment
Over the years, actors like Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Fassbender, Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson have been attached to the live-action "Akira" film, to be directed by Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli).

THR has now learned that Warner Bros is in talks with Keanu Reeves to play Kaneda, the gang leader. An offer has yet to be made, but sources claim that negotiations are going well.

In the script, the action moves from Neon-Tokyo to New Manhattan, where a biker gang leader tries to save his best friend from a medical experiment that threatens to unleash destructive powers.

The studio believes that bringing Reeves on board would give the project a better chance of getting another A-lister to take the role of Tetsuo, the best friend.

So, is it gonna be New Manhattan.

Hollywood should stop reimaging anime movies into live action films. They just don't perform at box offices and the visual result is always despicable.

@ Zebastian von Kane:

You are right unless they use japanese actors and japanese environment instead of moving the action to USA!!!!! Thatīs how classics get destroy always trying to bring the stuff to new worlds!!!!! It makes look like sh*t always!!!!!

WTF! He's way too old for the character. Damn you, Hollywood.

I don't get why they're trying to cast actors who are so old.

JGL for Tetsuo. Reeves is no Kaneda.

I don't think Keanu Reeves' amazing ability to play Keanu Reeves is what's needed this time.

The idea of a megacity with a clear divide between rich and poor, age and youth can be applied to Manhattan as much as Tokyo (or even, Rio, Lagos, L.A. or London).

Though I do think Hollywood is missing a trick (one they once knew well), people want to be transplanted to knew worlds not visit places they already inhabit. If Avatar was set in the Amazon would it have made half as much?

The real problem with this film is the ages of the mooted actors (if these rumours are assumed to be true).

Many, many, many of the main themes within Akira are centred around the youth of the characters; such as petty jealousies, the spirit of rebellion, adolescent crushes and an innumerable multitude beside.

In short if they cast a 46 year old man for this project and you go and buy a ticket for this on opening night, you'd better hope they also sell K-Y at the counter, because Hollywood will literally be f**king you whilst you watch this film.

Is Keanu still an A-lister? I feel like I haven't seen him in 5-7 years. In fact I haven't heard his name spoken since that SOuth Park episode where having Kenny on heaven's side was "basically like having a Keanu Reeves."

This isn't surprising at all. This is guy you go to when you want a pseudo-asian character (i.e... Akira).

And for all you technical people out there, yes, I know he's part asian.

Meh, they should leave this classic alone. At least he's Asian though unlike that punk in the Dragonball Z movie...
