"Zorro" Reboot Takes Place in the Future

"Zorro" Reboot Takes Place in the FutureSubmit Comment
It's been six years since director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) brought "The Legend of Zorro" to the big screen with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones starring.

LA Times has now learned that 20th Century Fox is planning to reboot the franchise with "Zorro Reborn," which will take the title character out of his historical California or Mexico setting, and place him into a desolate and post-apocalyptic future.

In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that's similar in tone to "No Country for Old Men."

The movie will be directed by Rpin Suwannath, a pre-visualization specialist who worked on a number of the "X-Men," "Matrix" and "Chronicles of Narnia" movies. The script has been written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the team behind the Warner Bros' "Dracula" reboot.

worst idea ever some stories just cant be transitioned to modern times.Sound like that stupid Robin Hood movie in the future by the Wachowskis.

^ Zorro is a re-visioning of Robin Hood in general

Um no!!

Lol, this reads like a laundry list of bad Hwood decisions. If they cast Shia LaBitch or Sam Worthingtonin as Zorro this will officially be the worst movie ever made.

BTW, if they want to change the character and the setting so much with this reboot, why don't they just dumb the Zorro attachment and give us something NEW?

So basically they planning to make a future version of Zorro. Let me tell you, Batman is the future Zorro. Both of them are wealthy guy, keep their sh*t and crap in a cave below their mansion, each is helped by a loyal servant, wear all black, has a cool ride for its period. So there's no need for future Zorro.

"Zorro Reboot Takes Place in the Future"

of course it does......

This doesnt sound like a Zorro movie.

A person in a mask kicking but does not make a Zorro movie.

This concept sounds awful, go for it!

Why didnt they reboot Zorro the Gay Blade? That was a classic.

Where's JakeVermont, because I need an effeminate eyeroll to go with this wonderfully exciting news.

""Zorro" Reboot Takes Place in the Future"

Well duh, if they haven't made the film yet!

"give us something NEW?"

They did. It's called 3D. And James Cameron says: be grateful, pleb.

Not in the timeline of Zorro, not the same setting as Zorro, not a caped crusader like Zorro. Then how about ya'll NOT name it Zorro?!?!?!

I'll pass judgement when I see what they make of it, but it's not the worst idea. The worst idea would be to just do another boring family-friendly swashbuckler movie that we've seen fifty times.
I've seen futuristic takes on classic heroes that turned out pretty damn good, so I won't shoot down the concept just yet.

@ Boggiel

There was no previous need before for a futuristic Batman, but the Batman Beyond cartoons and movies were a big hit and they've just brought it into continuity in the actual comics.
Same with Spider-Man. Even Dracula has seen some pretty decent future tales.

Was it Frankenstein Unbound that took place in the future?

Can't remember, don't know how to use the INTERNET.
triggax writes:

Yah it was.

And that was a f*cking terrible movie.
triggax writes:

Roger Corman directed that stink pile..

He must have directed 40 films by the time Frankenstein Unbound came out, I think it was his last director gig..

Good reason probably.

I want to be fair and say I'll give this a chance, but then I look again and confirm it says "Zorro" and "future" together......

I just can't see it working. Unless it ends up being a character similar to Zorro, but not really Zorro, perhaps even with a name other than Zorro........ but then it's just another "loner in a dystopian future fighting evil" movie.

Max Rockatansky Junior writes:

Why don't they just go all out and remake Zorro The Gay Blade ?

It's not like George Hamilton needs the work, ya know.
rabid writes:
on April 28th, 2011 at 12:57:41 AM

One explanation I read for it being set in the future is that although the concept of Zorro and his early stories belong to the public domain, the image of Zorro that people are familiar with is co-owned by Disney and Sony. They are each suing Fox and each other trying to prevent the film.
So Fox is doing everything they can to differentiate it from the Disney version. The cape, the mask, the whip, the horse are all copyrighted as an image.
But the original Zorro pulp rags didn't use that image. He had a totally different look and character.

I guess if you don't like it, you're free to make your own Zorro film. Just don't use a cape, a whip, or a bandit mask or Disney will sue you.
