"Cloverfield" Helmer to Direct "The Passage" Vampire Film

"Cloverfield" Helmer to Direct "The Passage" Vampire FilmSubmit Comment
We recently reported that Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield) had signed on to direct a remake of John Carpenter's "They Live," based on Ray Nelson's short story "8 O'Clock in the Morning."

And now comes word that he will also direct "The Passage," based on the best-selling Justin Cronin novel and about an experiment that goes awry and creates a swarm of bloodthirsty vampires that brings the world to the brink of extinction.

In "The Passage," a group of terminally ill cancer patients get healthy after being subjected to the bites of bats in South America. Naturally, the government see this as a cure for the disease and starts experimenting. They end up with a legion of nearly indestructible, telepathic vampire masters that begin infecting the populace.

The tone is similar to "28 Days Later" and is very different from "Let Me In," Reeves' last film which was also about vampires.

If they make another 30 Days of Night movie, Dead in Space is the next chronologically.

I'm actually interested in what this film could be. It's the one part of the Dracula story that we don't get to see. In the book, it's only a brief mention in a letter. There's definitely a good claustrophobic suspense story in there.

As much as i like this guy and Let Me In, i don't want him to do this. Move on and work on the short story adaptation and let someone else f*ck this up.

The problem with the vampire genre it has been exploited in too many differents ways which never gets to the point of what really a vampire is.... We had seen vampires in love, vampire gangs, chasing the neighbor who is a vampire even vampire kids who falls in love...

The point vampire was never mean to be nice people or nocturnal lovers... They were suppose to be creatures of the night of would suck the life out of you in any way even means to take you to bed. This creatures are not looking your well being they just want your blood...

Now talking about vampires in Hollywood, well it has been exploited too much that the real sense of what vampires are... lose his meaning... Is like the remakes which the essence of the original lose itself by a comteporary film of this time... Hollywood is not interested anymore on developing a great plot. They just want to full there pockets with your money in anyway they can....

Another vampire film. You can never enough of those. Apparently.

And you're right Johnny B, but as I've said, there's simply not much you can do with a dude who sucks blood, thus you must make the character engage in uncharacteristic behavior in order do something even marginally new.

The whole genre stinks. Someone sucks some blood. Someone dies or is turned into a vampire. Big deal. Thin and superficial, and structurally, it's a very tight, small, narrow and dim stage from which to launch an entire film, and yet, here we are with yet another bloody vamp flick.

I get the feeling that none of you have actually read "The Passage". It's not so much a book about vampires but a post-apocalyptic western where our main characters must survive the savage creatures roam through the night tearing men limb from limb and drive you insane whilst you sleep.

Though it is similar to both 28 Days Later and 30 Days of Night, the scope is far more epic than either of those two films.

It could be amazing.

At this rate, Cloverfield 2 will never happen. Tarter sauce.
