"12 Angry Men" Director Sidney Lumet Dead at 86

"12 Angry Men" Director Sidney Lumet Dead at 86Submit Comment
Legendary director Sidney Lumet, who directed such classics as "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," "Network," and "12 Angry Men," passed away Saturday morning at his home in New York City. The cause of death was lymphoma. He was 86.

Lumet, who received five Oscar nominations and seven DGA nominations for his work, was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2005 for his "brilliant services to screenwriters, performers and the art of motion pictures."

Lumet's last film was 2007's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," a crime thriller which blended together a robbery gone bad with a family drama and drew critical raves. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Marisa Tomei.

Sidney Lumet was married three times. He is survived by his wife since 1980, Mary Gimbel, his stepdaughter, his two daughters, his stepson, nine grandchildren and a great grandson.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Lumet.

The Verdict and Serpico are two of my favorite movies and he directed them both.

They both also stand up better than some of the movies coming out of Hollywood now.

RIP.
It's sad when people real talent die yet someone like Heidi Montag is still walking this upon this Earth.

At least his work will still stay relevant years later once we're all dead.

@Zeroguy

And ironically, most of the substance used to make his immortal films went in to the silicone used to prop up her tits.

Just watched Network the other day..

One of my all time favorites.

It's a shame when the biz loses talent. There's so little of it left.
Ranger writes:

PS: not to only single out '12 Angry Men'... but I have it (Cobb/Fonda version... NOT Tony Danza version... no offense Tony, but f*ck you), and one could hardly believe such a great movie could be made from being in a single room the whole time. Character-driver or what?!

Great stuff sir... thank you!
Ranger writes:

F*cking Oscars... giving out their honorary sh*t. Because they politically go with their favorites all the time, they over-look, thus back-log the deserved ones (not telling anyone here that doesn't already know this... I'M f*ckING VENTING!)... same as they did for Fonda (granted not honorary... and as much as I liked 'On Golden Pond' (mmmm... Jane!)...

To the Academy... you suck more than Lohan in rehab trying to score drugs!

never heard of the guy.
Zeroguy writes:

Yeah, this guy deserved it. It was just during unlucky years he lost. It's understandable losing out to David Lean, Milos Forman and Richard Attenborough. They each had amazing films those years. But he should have won for Network. Rocky was gloried sap.

RIP Mr Lumet

You did some great movies.

12 Angery Men is my favourite. It should'nt be a good film but somehow it is.

Great actors, great script, great direction.

This is incredibly shocking and saddening. He was undeniably fantastic. 12 Angry Men still one of the best films ever made and Network, one of the greatest cast assemblages and performances of all time (William Holden is beyond incredible). He will be sorely missed, wish he had gotten an Oscar for a specific work at some point, his resume is extraordinary

What a resume. Sure there is crap sprinkled in there, but just to have one of those 4 movies mentioned above would be dream for most up and coming directors these days. Cancer sucks, the dude deserved a better way to go out for sure.
