China Bans Time-Travel Movies and TV Series

China Bans Time-Travel Movies and TV SeriesSubmit Comment
China is known for banning just about anything and everything, and now they are taking on time-travel. In a response to an increase in movies and TV series that feature time-travel, the country decided that history is not represented well and thus all such projects are no longer allowed.

Here is a translation of the statement: "The time-travel drama is becoming a hot theme for TV and films. But its content and the exaggerated performance style are questionable. Many stories are totally made-up and are made to strain for an effect of novelty. The producers and writers are treating the serious history in a frivolous way, which should by no means be encouraged anymore."

It sounds like the problem isn't necessarily with time-travel, but with movies that place modern characters together with historical figures. The result is usually comical, and China finds the whole thing offensive. This doesn't mean that movies about historical figures can't be made, they just can't be inaccurate or represent China's heroes poorly.

That's a pretty weak argument for banning all movie and television shows with time travel As there are tons of both that are fully set in ages past that aren't even close to being historically accurate.

Chinese nuance, John? Two words: Tiananmen Square.

Hopefully this doesn't affect Looper.
minkowski writes:

Why would it? Looper is American-made, from the same production company that made Lord of War.

Are you in China, Zeroguy? If so, looks like Looper may not come your way:

"Thatís right: these stories are fiction. Except for Rian Johnsonís Looper, a time-travel film which just shot partially in China, with Chinese investment. That one was totally true."

America bans the comic book movies and TV series. Now that would be a spectacular and amazing news to read.

"China has heroes?"

They had, but that was like over 2 centuries ago.
minkowski writes:
on April 7th, 2011 at 11:14:54 PM

Well, they had one back in 1989, but he got run over by a tank.

No. I live in Canada so I'll probably have to wait two months after it limited release in 2012.
But I said that because I thought it still has to film in china and thought that it might screw the film. But I goofed, forgetting the production company is Chinese.

Don't worry guys I live in China right now and let me translate this translation.

"The Time-Travel movies and TV series are sh*t, they have crap stories, crap acting, crap directing. We have much better shows over here and do not want to buy this crap"

Just hope that clears everything up lads.

guess they wont be able to watch teenage mutant ninja turtles 3 anymore then
ministe2003 writes:

I imagine a translation would be more like, "time travel films/shows could potentially bring our slaughterous and oppressive history to the attention of lots of young, impressionable Chinese children who might one day rise up against us"
vaodsi writes:

tank man didn't get run over.. but he probably got killed check this out...

Yeah... i made that a couple years ago

rabid writes:

I think they just want to sweep as much of their horrific history under the rug as possible.
minkowski writes:
on April 8th, 2011 at 11:39:17 AM

You're right, 'tank man' (specifically) didn't get run over, but others did. I saw the mangled, bloody bodies mixed in with the crumpled bicycles. Looked like a really bad case of braces and gingivitis.

Thanks for the correction and clarification.

Unlike the communists who tried to destroy China's history, in a totally serious and non-frivolous way of course, during the "Cultural Revolution"...

@Mink IMDB is not a reliable source for Hollywood anything. They're based out of Seattle or Oregon or something like that and they have as much connection to Hollywood as the phone book.
