Disney Drops "Tron Legacy" Director's New Sci-Fi Film

Disney Drops "Tron Legacy" DirectorSubmit Comment
Joseph Kosinski directed Disney's "Tron Legacy," which surprisingly only made back its $170 million budget domestically. The studio was planning to develop Kosinski's "Horizons (aka Oblivion)" sci-fi film, but has now decided to back out of the deal.

The big-budget film centers on a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler. Disney was already in the design stages and was in talks with such actors as Tom Cruise to star.

It's unclear why Disney decided to abandon the project, but it may have something to do with the fact that "Tron Legacy" performed below expectations and failed to excite the critics (50% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes). The studio did, however, allow for Kosinski to shop the project to other studios. He will do so this week.

Then shop around mate, he might get a studio that will give him some freedom.

Too bad, I'm always game for some new big-budget sci-fi. And direction-wise, TRON: Legacy didn't suck. The script was crappy and the 3D useless, but other than that it was OK.

Oh, GREAT!!

A godawful sequel/remake of a dumb nerdish antique killed a promising ORIGINAL movie.

Go die, Holywood.

Sounds great. He seems a good director, it's not his fault Tron 2 was written by committee and the audience lost interest in the middle of the second act. It's his fault that we gained interest in movie in the first act.

"A godawful sequel/remake of a dumb nerdish antique killed a promising ORIGINAL movie."

That almost entirely accurate.

Well, anyway, good for this guy. No one wants to really work with Disney anyway.

I didnt think tron was as sh*tty as people say. I liked it. Not saying it was the greatest scifi ever but it was OK. It seems to me that not many people understood it, thus, they lash out and bash it every chance they get.
I'd like to see a sequel they could go in so many directions now it would be awesome.
Ease up on the 3D though.

"It seems to me that not many people understood it, thus, they lash out and bash it every chance they get."

What about it is hard to understand? The first film was made when computers were newish and cool and strange and alluring and all that other sh*t used to decribe some odd new addition to societie's pantheon of wonders, and then the mystical computer became as mundane as a toaster.

Disney simple failed to appreciate this apsetc of the first films popularity, on rooted in the context of the early 80s.

That and a wooden script.

Besides, you're speaking to the Matrix generation, and I can assure you that if they understood that gobbledegook film they understood Disney's attempt to render modern technology into mass-appeal entertainment fare.

How about Disney killing the chances by banning all copies of the first Tron being bought or rented before Legacy came out, preventing new fans? Maybe it seemed like a good idea at first, but I think it really hurt the franchise as a whole.

I liked Legacy for what it was. Very entertaining and didn't really think the story was that bad. Didn't have much to work with.
