"Batman Returns" Butler Michael Gough Dead at 94

"Batman Returns" Butler Michael Gough Dead at 94Submit Comment
Michael Gough, the British actor best known for playing Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred in a series of Batman movies (Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin), died Thursday. He was 94 years old.

Gough appeared in more than 150 movies and television shows, including British sci-fi show "Doctor Who," and recently voiced characters in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Corpse Bride." But he remains best remembered for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman franchise, opposite three different Batmans: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

The veteran actor died at home in England, surrounded by family, his ex-wife Anneke Wills said through her agent.

"As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St. Patrick's Day," said his ex-wife. "And he did, just. In the end ... there is only love."

Michael Gough never stopped working, but it makes sense that he'll sadly only be eulogized as Alfred. And Why is he "Batman Returns Butler" if he was Alfred in all the Burton and Schumacher Batmans? Dumb headline.

The fact that he died on St. Patrick's Day, a day he chose to die on, brings to mind an old Irish saying I saw on a website today:

"May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live."

One of only two actors to be in all four and he had the heart and wisdom of the character from the beginning. R.I.P. Michael Gough. Thanks for bringing one of the wisest comic book characters to life.
