Tom Hanks is attached to star as true-life hero Captain Richard Phillips in the upcoming movie about the international incident of an American ship captured by Somali pirates.
Columbia Pictures picked up the life rights to Phillips, as well as his book ("A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea"), in spring 2009. The goal is to retell the story of the captain of the trading vessel Maersk Alabama who, in order to save his crew, surrendered himself to Somali pirates after his ship was hijacked. The standoff, which commanded worldwide attention, tested the strength of Phillips and his crew as well as the resolve of the Navy commanders and President Barack Obama to bring Phillips home alive.
The new film is written by Billy Ray (State of Play, Flightplan) and is produced by the team behind "The Social Network," which includes Scott Rudin Michael DeLuca, Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti.

These oil companies can EASILY hire Mercs, ex-SEALS, etc. to work their ships. Shoot these pirate f*ckers before they get the first climbing hook up the boat. Shoot their sh*t boat 'til it sinks. When a few hundred/thousand don't make it back to shore after a while... they'll get the message.
