"Percy Jackson and the Olympians" Sequel is Moving ForwardSubmit Comment
LA Times is reporting that Fox 2000 is planning to shoot the sequel to "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" as early as this summer. The movie will be subtitled "The Sea of Monsters" and based on the second book in Rick Riordan's five-book series.

The studio has hired Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Agent Cody Banks) to write a script for the new film. As director has yet to be hired. Chris Columbus, who helmed the first installment, is not expected to return. He will, however, produce the picture.

The first film was about ordinary boy who discovers that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon and that many elements from ancient Greek mythology still exist today. The second book follows Percy and his group of friends as they head to the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece and to free a friend who has been captured there.

"Lightning Thief" grossed only $88 million domestically on a $95 million budget. The film went on to earn another $137 million internationally, making it a hit.

Dear god, if they ever get around to whoring out The Wheel of Time like they've done with Twlight, Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, we won't see a new film for a century.

And I wonder if it worries anyone else that writers nowadays write their books with an eye to the big screen. That can't be good for the health of literature, but who gives a f*ck, right?

Watching Dexter right now and I like that. A lot. Hall is a f*cking hoot as the man with the murderous plan.

"Percy Jackson and the Olympians" Sequel is Moving Forward

Wait. Who the f*ck saw the first one ?

I mean, is this like f*cking Twilight ... putting out movies just because novels are made about this ? f*ck!

That makes about as much sense as remaking Spiderma*

* sigh *

This series of books was fantastic for anyone who loves fantasy/adventure... its just a lot of fun. But the first movie needlessly changed a bunch of stuff in the book. Including important stuff and characters. I dont know how they will continue this series while staying in anyway faithful to the books... but hey this is hollywood... they would film child rape if it made money...... and then probably make a sequal... and then reboot the franchise

@Syriph

Don't give Hollywood any ideas.

The last part of that sounds like an idea riffing off the life and times of Roman Polanski.

well, the 1st one is better than any Twilight movies, but still a bad movie!

i think using the term 'hit' here is a bit disingenuous. after marketing/distribution fees, you should likely double the original $95mil budget. that would make this returded flick a mild moneymaker. my guess is that they paid a sh*tpile to license the entire series, and since the first one did okay, they figure they might as well wring as much cash out of the license as they can so it doesn't go to waste.

The first one showed potential. Personally I think Chris Columbus was getting his action legs back since he hasn't done anything magical or action based since the first two Harry Potters. I'll see a second one. I think he'll put it together better this time.

The first movie was an insult to Greek Mythology as 'Twilight' was an insult to vampires. This will continue to suck as many balls as possible.

They have to write the script, find a director, scout the locations, build sets, and shoot by this summer? Yeah right!

@minkowski There have always been movies based on books right from the very first movies. For example The First Men In The Moon (1901), Alice In Wonderland (1903), The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (1910, there were even sequels based on other Oz books too) and Frankenstein. (1910) There's probably not a year that's gone by in the last 100 years where there haven't been any movies based on books, it's not some crazy new idea!
