Christopher Guest Directed the Controversial Groupon Super Bowl Ads Posted: February 8th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
While there were plenty of great commercials during the Super Bowl, the most controversial ones were courtesy of Groupon, which had celebrities talking about serious global issues, before explaining that they only care about saving money. Timothy Hutton spoke about Tibet, Elizabeth Hurley discussed rainforests, and Cuba Gooding Jr showed concern for the whales. After the commercials aired, many people went on Twitter to express their disgust. But there is more to the story. It turns out that the entire idea came from the mind of Christopher Guest (A Mighty Wind, Best in Show), who directed the PSA-style commercials, and Groupon will help each cause with massive donations. It seems that the whole thing was innocent, but people are still upset about the approach. Check out the commercials below and let us know if you find them offensive.

Elizabeth Hurley - Rainforest:
Cuba Gooding Jr. - Whales: Source: Groupon

And? So Hollywood is full of moneyhungry whores? So what? *yawn* Call me when someone says something I don't know.

Oh man, Christopher Guest is amazing. Just top notch comedy there.

What it comes down to is that people need to lighten up.

Oh, I get it. Groupon = Group + coupon. And here I was thinking it was short for Grey Poupon.
Kept wondering what the f*ck a rich white man's mustard had to do with whales, trees and Cuba Gooding.

How dense can people be that they do not realize these were satire?
Hurley did look good, though.

1. Why is Elizabeth Hurley getting nailed by Shane Warne?
2. The Cuba Gooding Jr one made complete sense actuall!

They keep hiring Cuba Gooding Jr. ?
Why ? Was Don Cheadle busy ?

lay off the plastic surgery. You're starting to move into Sly Stallone/Joan Rivers neighborhood there.

The Shane Warne/Elizabeth Hurley was just rumors wasn't it.
The Australian Cricket Board made that up so he had a good reason not to come out of retirement and play in the Ashes, lol

There's a word for people who found these commercials offensive -- starts with an "f" and rhymes with maggot.
minkowski writes: on February 8th, 2011 at 9:17:43 PM
You mean the one that starts with a CH and rhymes with hey?
Mudders writes: on February 8th, 2011 at 10:28:51 PM

Meh! Maybe next time Groupon can do a commercial about native Americans being wiped out by Europeans, that will be in very interesting.

Christopher Guest? No wonder they were funny. At least better than the other commercials. And they take a swipe at liberal bugaboos hence the uproar.
Ranger writes: on February 9th, 2011 at 12:26:52 AM
Plus Christopher Guest has been nailing Jamie Lee Curtis for decades, so good on him (good in her).
The only thing that is working out is my d*ck.
As for this, and people not taking it as the satire it was intended, Mel Gibson added:
'You can all GET DOWN, SMILE... and FUC*N BLOWWWW MEEEEEE!!!'

Considering how must people don't get irony, it was quite ballsy to air that commercial on Super Bowl.
ShizPaf writes: on February 9th, 2011 at 9:23:33 AM
I am not offended. Probably niether were the Tibetans the rainforests, or the whales. Whales don't watch the superbowl. They like reruns of Everbody Loves Raymond.
Guest is a genius. Waiting for Guffman, Mighty Wind and Best in Show are crazy good. Spinal Tap is a classic. I say turn those commercials up to eleven.

I thought they were funny. Who cares.
