"Prince of Persia" Director to Helm "Great Expectations"Submit Comment
Mike Newell, the director of "Prince of Persia" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," has signed on to direct "Great Expectation," based on the book by Charles Dickens.

The story revolves around a humble orphan who suddenly becomes a gentleman with the help of an unknown benefactor. The new movie will be part of a year-round celebration of Charles Dickens' bicentenary in 2012.

The British Film Institute is also planning the largest ever retrospective of film and television adaptations of Dickens' work which will go on a global tour in 2012. "Dickens' stories have spawned films, plays, television dramas and musicals and after Shakespeare, no other writer matches Dickens in terms of global cultural influence," said Film London representative.

Charles d*ckens is always cool, but PoP was totally lackluster. Best thing was Gemma. I enjoyed Clash more because it didn't think it was better than it actually was.

So a potentially good movie involving the Persian empire, was destroyed by this guy. Now some studio head is letting him destroy a classic. Wounderful! F You!! Buddy

Guys, but didn't you like the seven Hassansins (Assassins of Persia) at least?

I thought they were cool - and original.

Change the title to, "Low Expectations" directed by Mike Newell.

Gemma Arterton was the only thing that did look great on Prince of Persia, everything besides her sucked, (she also sucks aka swallows) the entire production, but all thanks to the unique "vision" of Mike Newell.

I haven't seen PoP yet but I'm sure its a huge shift of gears. ai liked the book well enough the couple times I read it, could be he just needs to direct something less actiony. Expectations is much less actiony, though he might do a slo mo shot of Miss Havisham looking like the living dead in her wedding dress.

prince of persia was garbage. gemma arterton was OKAY, she was not great, she is not that hot and she had a sh*ttily written character. bruckheimer circa 2010 pissed me off, he gave us this dogsh*t and 'sorcerer's apprentice'? wtf. sorry but the bernard/miro writing team hasn't done anything i would call 'good' yet, i have no idea why they're being hired for national treasure 3, they're just going to f*ck it up.

@Shay: They weren't more original than anything else featured a mystical order of assassins.

How can a man who allows Jake gylenhall to come out with such a terrible English accent, half c*ckney half non existant BBC English, be directing one of e most influential authors works of all time. Even guy Ritchie didn't let brad Pitt pLay a gangster in snatch coz he couldn't handle the accent, why didn't he just make Jake do a stupid middle eastern accent at least that would have made sense

the persian hassasins were historical figures who smoked pot. That is why it is sometimes called hash. They are not original.. they are historical. That's like watching a movie with a samurai and being like "DUDE! It had a samurai! That's original!"
shayhiri writes:

Do I really have to explain?

They ARE original, because no one ever used them!! Look up "originality".

How many movies you've seen with gangsters?
Thousands.

With ninjas?
Hundreds.

With Assassins (Hashishin)?
Only one.

Also they are original, because they are the "original assassins". Even the word "assassin" comes from their very name. Look up "origin".

They were motherf*ckers SO bad that the western word calls every assassin with THEIR name ever since. HOW cool is that?
