Tyler Perry is Alex Cross in "Kiss the Girls" Prequel

Tyler Perry is Alex Cross in "Kiss the Girls" PrequelSubmit Comment
Author James Patterson (Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider) has been working to reboot his Alex Cross franchise with an origin story focusing on the detective in the early years of his career.

Back in August, it was reported that Idris Elba (The Losers) was the favorite to play Cross, the characters previously played by Morgan Freeman. But Deadline has now learned that Elba is out and Tyler Perry has been brought on as his replacement.

Rob Cohen (Fast and the Furious, xXx, The Mummy 3), who has stepped in to take over for David Twohy (Chronicles of Riddick), will direct from a script by Kerry Williamson. The plan is to begin filming in the spring and for this film, called "I, Alex Cross," to be the first of a new trilogy.

@bandolero- HOW DARE YOU!!!! suggesting that Tyler Perry sticks to directing. He is awful on all fronts. Biggest hack in Hollywood. Only reason he's famous is cuz all his films are aimed at black people, and of course other white people and critics must like his movies or else they're racist. He's underneath M Night north tower in my book. Least M Night tried to change genres with the last air bender movie(even though he failed miserably). Tyler Perry sucks ass.

Good call there. Replace the hack Idris Elba with the awesomeness that is Tyler Perry. His turn in the latest Star Trek-movie showed us a versatility, not seen from a black actor since DW Griffith's days. Hopefully they will take away the directing from Cohen and give that to Perry as well. For years he has been one of the most gifted directors in the world, who hadn't have a shot on the big league. If he also can do a rewrite on the script, we are all in for a real treat.

Are there no truly talented young black actors? Where's this generation's Poitier? Seriously.

I will say this: Cohen isn't the worst director. he's made some unpleasant films, sure, but a number of his films are watchable guilty pleasures, films you watch to be entertained, not because they're examples of great cinema.

Having said the obvious, I don't think Perry is the worst choice possible. He's made his own abhorrent films, but who's to say he can't do some serious acting? It's not like he's a Wayans brother or something truly horrible. On the flip side, he's no Freeman, but then very few actors are, including most of the white ones.
nightjunkie writes:

Some of you people are racist morons. Don't lump all black people into one group and say ALL of his movies are liked by them. A lot of black people despise Tyler Perry's movies because they're terrible

@Minkowski
Umm no that is not the reason why black actors aren't getting more movie roles. There are plenty of talented black actors in Hollywood, same as there being plenty of talented Americans in Hollywood (referring to Superman). Its just that studios would rather cast any attractive white person for a lead role than a minority.

Plenty of young black actors could play Alex Cross. Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Laz Alonso (Avatar) would be great, and Idris Elba would have been perfect, except the fact that studios are more racist than they let on and aren't willing to put in +$100 million on a project with a black lead who isn't Denzel or Will Smith.

velocityknown writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 4:42:32 PM

@Nightjunkie

No one is lumping all black people into a group and saying they all like Tyler Perry movies. If anything at all, people are saying that Tyler Perry aims his movies only towards a black audience, which you can't deny.

I wouldn't say anyone's exhibited the qualities of a racist moron just because they don't want a talentless hack in a good role.
minkowski writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 4:45:40 PM

I don't think it's Hollywood racism, per se, it's playing to the demographic majority.

Fact is, white folks go to movies far more than any other demographic, and white folks are more comfortable watching white people, and I don't think that's any more racist than the fact black people prefer to see films filled with black people.

I guess you could call that racism by proxie, but then everyone is guilty.

But yes, Idris Elba would have been better, but he has that accent thing going on, I think. Can he do english without the accent?

Hell, just give the role to Hill Harper.
nightjunkie writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 4:46:24 PM

@VelocityKnown

Maybe you should read the comments a little more thoroughly. Cause some people on here definitely are saying that.

And read what bandolero999 wrote and try to tell me that wasn't racist...but then again its standard for many commenters on this site to put in racist comments on every post about a minority actor.
nightjunkie writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 5:00:03 PM

@Minkowski

Idris Elba has been pulling off an excellent American accent for years. He played Stringer Bell on "The Wire."

Yes, Hollywood is to an extent, racist. White women are predominately cast in movie roles and it doesn't matter if they can or cannot act as long as their face is pretty and their waist is slim.

White men can attain leading roles for films with bloated budgets, "Avatar" and "Tron: Legacy" come to mind. Sam Worthington and Garrett Hedlund had barely an acting resume to speak of but the studios cast them as the leads because all they had to do was ask for little money, promise to do sequels and look the part. If the same characters were black, the studios would try and cast Denzel or Will Smith rather than audition young black actors.

The only way Hollywood can change is if black directors and producers get a shot at making their own movies. There are plenty of black directors who make Tyler Perry look like the hack he is...

"The only way Hollywood can change is if black directors and producers get a shot at making their own movies. There are plenty of black directors who make Tyler Perry look like the hack he is..."

They are occasionally given shots, and they almost always make films for black people or films with racist overtones, like Spike Lee. You can't get white people into seats with that attitude, using the director chair as a pulpit or an avenue of patronization.

Fact is, 99.9% of average film goers don't care who directs. They go through word of mouth or how a film looks. But black films look different from white films, and you can't expect white people to flock to something Madea Goes to Jail. Different cultural values and different comedy.

"White women are predominately cast in movie roles and it doesn't matter if they can or cannot act as long as their face is pretty and their waist is slim."

Because attractive white women are desirable to white men, who fill a vast number of theater seats.

Basically, it all comes down to money. Black actors aren't very profitable, and neither are Asians and Latinos.

I don't understand how I was racist was it the popeyes one? I was advertising it because they really make good fried chicken.

I can't be racist is impossible I'm not white I'm mexican colombian so I can be either called a beaner,colombian drug dealer and I live in miami and no one over there speaks english either spanish or creole so suck my balls if I'm saying the truth about tyler perry.

I'm just an equal oportunity hater that's all

Did anyone hear about the Aronofksy/Armond White feud? Aronofsky called out White at a New Yorks Critics Association Ceremony and then Armond White said Aronofsky was a racist.

Of course.
minkowski writes:

Armond White called Darren a racist? Funny then that White faulted Black Swan for devoiding Nina of any ethnic specifics...

But White has a point when he says Darren Aronofsky has descending into specious filmmaking, at least with respect to The Fountain. I've never like a nonsensical film so much as that one...

velocityknown writes:

Darren Aronofsky has a problem with getting a little crazy for his own good (The Fountain not excluded). I thought Black Swan was great, but that was the one problem with it.

Armond White also gets a little crazy for his own good though. He could've taken advantage of the opportunity and legitimately criticized Darren for caring what one critic thinks about his film, but he made himself look worse by calling him a racist.

That's like when Sarah Palin had the perfect opportunity to get Family Guy for making a tasteless joke, but she tried to say they just wanted to bash retarded people. And they were able to counter with the mentally challenged person they had doing voice work on the show.

Apparently people need a special team for making decent comebacks.

@SkippySpartan

He's a talentless hack.

And in other news, Anthony Anderson has replaced Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox in The Dark Knight Rises. Anderson has been said to have coveted the role since Begins, but added that his primary responsibility in this final Batman chapter was to quote "spend more time running from explosions like a little girl and screaming his head off. And solving the mystery of Bale's Batman voice during a staring contest. And breakdancing".

I swear to god, if the previous headline comes true, I'm shooting the damn TV.
