More on Henry Cavill's "Superman" Casting, Christian Bale Comments

Posted: January 31st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
More on Henry CavillSubmit Comment
Now that Henry Cavill ("The Tudors") has been cast as the man of steel in the upcoming "Superman" reboot, directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, we're now getting a few more details about the decision.

It turns out that the 27-year-old British actor beat out five contenders for the role, including Matthew Goode (Watchmen), Matthew Bomer (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Joe Manganiello ("True Blood") and Colin O'Donaghue (The Rite).

Goode was on the short list to play the lead role in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," but had to take himself out of the running in order to leave his schedule open for "Superman." Bomer played Superman in several Toyota commercials and was Brett Ratner's first choice to play the character in the "Superman" remake, which Bryan Singer eventually took over. Hammer, meanwhile, was set to play Batman in the "Justice League of America" movie, which eventually got scrapped.

And Cavill has his own "Superman" past. He was on McG's shortlist for "Superman Returns" before the director was replaced by Singer. Nolan first noticed Cavill when the actor auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne in "Batman Begins" and has considered Cavill a contender for the Superman role ever since the reboot was announced.

There have also been talks of a "Justice League" movie, possibly directed by Nolan. Christian Bale has already agreed to return for any film that Nolan wants him for, but what does that actor think of Cavill as Superman? When E! Online asked Bale that exact question during the SAG awards, Bale looked at the reporter with a blank look, before stating: "Well done for whoever you mentioned."

These stupid reporters are acting like Bale is Batman 24/7 and he's out there hanging out with Cavill and Reynolds in a secret headquarters on the moon. WTF.

If (When) the new spiderman movie flops then whatever, if they were to ever screw up batman then I'd be sad, but if these completely capable people (except snyder, who I am not convinced is capable) screw Superman up, then I am going to be PISSED. And will boycott WB films for an entire year afterwards.
minkowski writes:

"except snyder, who I am not convinced is capable"

He's capable. At visuals. Telling a story people give a sh*t about, not so capable.

Dunno about this yet. Then again he would look great walking around the world eating seed and contemplating life.
velocityknown writes:

I think is pretty strong casting, he's not unknown, but he's not really famous, the work he has done has earned him some respectability among fans and peers and he looks the part.

The only question mark in this project is Zack Snyder. In three films he has proven one things: He's very gifted visually. However, I still call into question his ability to tell a story. I'm cutting him a little slack because the three films he's directed have been big budget adaptations which has maybe limited his freedom. That being said I think Sucker Punch is going to be the biggest indicator of who we're getting as a director.

*I forgot writing this comment that he also did Dawn of the Dead which had mixed reception. I can't speak to its quality, I don't know if anyone else can.

Armie Hammer would've been great for Captain America. Not a good fit for Superman in my opinion. Good actor who deserves a high profile role though.

And Christian Bale is a d*ck.

Maybe a shower and a shave and not bringing his trailer park kid into the movie might work

But who knows
velocityknown writes:

And Matthew Bomer? That guy is wayyyyyyyy too short to play Superman. Anyone watch "Chuck" he's like a full foot shorter than Zach Levi.

well ill give this one a chance Zack snyder's a good director I enjoyed 300,dawn of the dead, watchmen and he has a talent of having unknown actors and making them shine.I got more faith in this than capt america, green lantern, emo spiderman those are all disasters in the making

Bales a d*ck but hes a good actor hes done some good performances like American psycho, machinist, that racist white dude in shaft,he was a p*ssy in that movie 310 to yuma. His voice when he turns into batman does annoy me though but he's way better than clooney.and that tantrum on the set of Terminator was pretty hilarious as well

The Superman lead has to go to a male actor who's good looking in a masculine type of way, has a good enough body for it (broad shoulders & tall), and has enough acting chops to pull off a lead role like this. This was probably the casting directors' point of few when it came to all 6 contenders for the role...

Matthew Goode: Suffers from that unfortunate Gay Face that many British men have (lucky for Henry that he doesn't suffer the same affliction).

Matthew Bomer: Smokin' hot but the fact that he's gay might scare away some men and women, especially in the U.S.

Armie Hammer: Doesn't seem to have the grits to pull it off - he seems more like a supporting actor.

Joe Manganiello: Amazing body that would be perfect for Superman but has a terrible butterface (huge crooked nose, weird upper lip when he grins or smiles that makes him look too gritty which is why he's perfect as a wolf in 'True Blood').

Colin O'Donaghue: Has a little bit of a gay vibe (or maybe he just doesn't look masculine enough) and has that kind of in between face where you can't decide if it's attractive or not.

Henry Cavill: Very attractive face, has a studly manly look (no Gay face), tons of female fans due to Showtime's "The Tudors". Not to mention that he has 2 major films coming out in 2011: 'Immortals' with Freida Pinto, Kellan Lutz, & Mickey Rourke. And also 'The Cold Light of Day' with Sigourney Weaver & Bruce Willis.

Henry was the obvious and best choice. Hopefully he pulls it off.

girl_watches_movies- You're making girls look stupid, worst previews needed some one to represent the female race and they sent you and that texas whore. What is a gay face? is that a scientific term? A homosexual has different muscles in his face than other human beings. Your whole argument was about how "gay" they looked i'm sorry if you got gang banged by the lacrosse team in school and your two daddys didn't love you but can you focus on the acting abilities maybe. They're not making superman for loads of middle aged women to stick fingers up c*nts too (maybe a cheeky little finger up the bum, vulcan love punch any one?). They're making it for nerds to have visceral orgasms. So stop being such a f*cking dyke!
AYT BALL writes:

^^ LOL!

But seriously, we do need more ladies on here to balance the place out, and the whole, hes more gay, hes less gay thing isnt the best contribution ever.
Cinemaisdead writes:

Definetly i know loads of girls who know what good films are and dont judge it on how "gay" the actor looks. That said the sexism that fills every thread might scare a normal girl away, that and boogiel's avatar lol

tt- didn't watch it in the end mate the mrs had a "headache" and wanted to watch eastenders because apparantly sh*ts going down on albert square. I might go this weekend but the fighter looks quite tempting aswell is it worth seeing in the pictures mate?
ZenShark writes:

zack snyder did an amazing job with the guardians, giving almost photo-realistic owls personality and charm. i think he is improving as a director by leaps and bounds, and will do a great job in superman.
trailertrash writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 6:05:02 AM

Eastenders (shaking my head here)

Nah Doesn't need to be seen on the big screen IMO, other than the sex scene with Mini Anden which was pretty good 20ft high lol
Freudian_Nightmare writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 6:11:04 AM

I am not a Superman-fan, I have always stated that he's the most uninteresting superhero. However, in this I have some faith. Zack Snyder is, visually, a great director. If anyone have seen his Dawn of the Dead-remake, you would know that he can also tell a story. He will also have Nolan to guide him, just in case.

This Cavill dude seems like a good casting choice, he's an actor on the rise, not to well-known.
Cinemaisdead writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 6:14:13 AM

Oh don't worry i wasn't watching it aswell i was cooking fajitas, i think eastenders has just accepted that its a comedy now because some of the cahracters and storylines are so ridiculous you'd think the writers never actually mixed with civilisation. I'm on a good streak with films at the moment i went to california the other day and on the plane there and back watched Social Network, The Town, The Other Guys and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which was f*cking amazing... i've got high standards for the next film i see lol
AYT BALL writes:

@ Cinemaisdead - The FIghters a good movie, bales really good in it, id recommend 127 hours if you havent seen it yet and true grit, they were my fave 2 of late
AYT BALL writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 6:30:36 AM

@ Zen and Freud - agree with both of you on Snyder, Guardians was surprisingly good and Dawn is one of the best remakes out there. People talk about his story telling ability but he handles fantasy pretty well and although set in a real (ish) world superman is as fantasy as super heroes come.
AYT BALL writes:

Cinemaisdead writes:

Ayt Ball- ahh cheers mate i was probabyl gonna leave 127 for dvd but i've heard the cinema does enhance the experience, i'll definetly be seeing true grit on the silver screen but i'm torn with the fighter as bale and whalberg are my two least favourite people in hollywood.
AYT BALL writes:
on February 1st, 2011 at 7:02:14 AM

@ Cinema - To be honest whalberg is just whalberg, nothing outstanding about him in the movie, but when you watch it you will realise he and the character dont need to be, its about how the family etc control him and try run his life so if he was too strong a character you wouldnt buy it, Bales performance is up there with the Machinist though, huge transformation.

127 Hours is one of those storys that shouldnt work as a movie, but Boyle makes it really tense and even when you know how it ends you still have high hopes. True grits just propper old school western at its best.

AYT- Totally agree with you on John Barry WTF , Where is the respect WP !!!!

Cinema- Just got the Town and The Other Guys on Blu Ray looking forward to them.

As AYT said 127 Hours is a really good film wellworth catching on the big screen.

True Grit seems to have taken forever to come out over here, really looking forward to that movie.

What's with the c*nt and dyke and lacrosse gangbang comments? LOL!! And you even managed to say something about Texas but with your borderline-retard spelling I'm not sure what it was. As funny as they were, I have to say, your comments make you sound a bit like a woman hating psycho. Are you a nerdy virgin who's never been deflowered and constantly gets turned down by the ladies? And you probably also have a GAY FACE, huh? Look, it's not so bad. Some women actually LIKE gay faces like that of Matthew Goode. Colin Firth is the poster child of gay faces. And look at how many British women love him? If you have a gay face you will be very very popular in England (assuming you don't already live there). As they say in the UK, 'Cheer up, lad'. Anyways, I'm very glad they chose Henry. He's hot, muscular, tall, has huge broad shoulders, a 6 pack, cute booty, gorgeous blue eyes and a beautiful face. This man is sex on a stick, people! Couldn't have made a better choice.
