Thanks to USA Today, we now have the first official photos from Jim Carrey's upcoming "Mr Popper's Penguins" comedy, based on the 1930s children's book. Check out the photos below.

In the movie, Carrey plays Tom Popper, a New York real estate developer who tears down beloved landmarks and erects skyscrapers in their place. His one-track mind leaves him estranged from his family, including his wife (Carla Gugino), who has divorced him and moved on to a new relationship.

And for years Popper has been out of contact with his "kooky" father, who leaves him with an unusual inheritance: a penguin. The bewildered Popper registers a complaint which is met with the arrival of another five birds.

The penguins manage to crack Mr. Popper's cold exterior, and soon he's cranking up the air conditioning in his stylish apartment, rolling up the rugs and piling on extra layers of clothes to make his new guests more comfortable.

^ really , How can you tell.

I liked to see Carrey in a good and funny movie again, But this looks like it could be Ace Ventura 3 : Sleeping with the Penguins or something

They should've renamed this Ace Nanuck : Penguin Surrogate.

The only way this would even be remotely funny is if the penguins kept humping his legs throughout the whole movie, and even then, penguins don't hump legs and I would fall asleep if all it was was Jim mugging to the penguins the whole time.

Jim carreys film choices have beeb hitting the sh*tter lately, and another penguin movie haven't they had enough with march of the penguins and happy feet?

I sense carrey's gonna pull an Owen wilson soon for his poor movie choices and being dumped by jenny maccarthy

How bout a fire marshall bill movie

@bandolero999

Only if he pours gasoline on himself and sets himself on fire.

But then again, that's so Travolta.

Ill see it because Im a huge fan of Carreys (not matter how sh*tty his movies have been lately), plus Gugino is a sexy bonus.

@trailer i would love to see another Ace Ventura movie, no doubt, and see Carrey go back to his roots. Thought 3 Stooges might help since its his specialty (physical comedy) but he dropped out

@Max. Good call. I'd bet on the depressed Jim down for Harry Carrey for $500 to win.

PS: Is this Jim Carrey day here at WP or what?

RE: McCarthy. What a f*cking gold-digger, tramp, ho. I'd still nail her, don't get me wrong. I'm just sayin'

To save his career (if he carreys to)... he should move to dramatic stuff. It's Robin Williams' dramatic stuff that saved his ass (Awakenings, What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting).

Will Ferrel was good in 'Winter Passing' with Ed Harris.

That off the hook thing Carrey is known for isn't produced enough (or well enough) to keep his wallet afloat.

The5thBeatle5-

I'm not that keen on this 3 Stooges movie that they keep trying to make, But Jim Carrey on board would have made a lot more sense than Johnny Knoxville and co for sure.

Dumb and Dumber was his funniest film IMO and i liked The Trueman Show that was very good also, Not seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but alot of people like that film also.

So maybe Ranger is on to something there, maybe that is the route he should take with his career now.

Jim Carrey already tried the 'dramatic' route and failed. He did do Eternal Sunshine, but he also did 23.

As for Robin Williams, yes he did migrate away from comedy, but that was only after he exhausted that acting avenue, after he was no longer a comedic draw. And even then, he took a few good dramtic roles only to follow with numerous failures and straight-to-DVD abominations.

His career save, through a dramatic acting detour, only forestalled the inevitable decline that came once his true talent, his comedic appeal, faltered and the faded.

The same with Carrey, who ran through the gambit with The Cable Guy and Liear, Liar and capped off by Brude Almighty.

Now, looking at his resume, he did well with the Majestic, once again playing to his stronge comedic capabilities, as well as Man ont he Moon, once again applying his comedic facial gestures and body language, which has always been his strongest suite, whereas Williams excelled an comedic delivery per the stand-up route.

Since Carrey's more heavily comedic ventures have faded, he's been forced to either fail doing drama, which he is generally poorly suited and perhaps avoids for obvious personal reasons, or by lending his warped and comedically lyrical facial and body expressions to mediocre films that have done only marginally well.

I just don't see him going pure dramatic unless he get's desperate, and given that he may have more range as a comedian, he won;t have to go that route for a while, and perhaps never, and as he ages, he may find more work doing voice acting, avoiding appearing directly in a film entirely.

In short: drama is neither his 'thing' nor is he best suited for it, and he has time yet to exploit his more considerable comedic abilities fellow comedians, like Williams et al, lack entirely.

minkowski writes:

But back to the film in question:

I don't see this as terribly appealing to the masses.

I see it as a middling film to put before the kids in an attempt to find a happy middle ground between more adult fare and some lackluster G-rated CG pudding making the cursory cinematic circles.

But if delivers a check to Carrey, well no one can blame him for earning it. It's an honest way to make a living, even if the end-product isn't either stand-out or palatable.
