Sacha Baron Cohen's Freddie Mercury Biopic to Shoot This Year

Back in September, we learned that Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) had signed on to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a biopic being written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Last King of Scotland).

Now comes word from Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor that Morgan has already delivered the first draft of the script and the plan is to begin filming later this year for a fall 2012 release.

"Work is now fully under way for the much-vaunted feature film on the life of Freddie," they explained. "Peter Morgan has delivered a first draft of the movie, which everyone is very excited about, and Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie. The whole team now working on preparing for a shoot later this year, and a release in the late Autumn of 2012."

This is the first time the surviving members of Queen have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band.

Done right this could be a really good and interesting movie.

I can see Cohen as Freddie Mercury as well good choice.

I don't know enough about Freddie's life to decide on how interesting this could be. However, the music alone does.

^ Maybe they thought they would leave it alone after the success of RDJ Sherlock Holmes

Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley Without A Clue, was a very good Sherlock Holmes Comedy IMO

freud-

Your right the music and live performances alone would make a good movie.

But it depends on (cough cough) which way they take the story outside of the music, I don't know.

I guess it will concentrate on Queen when they are the super group and his off stage relationships and his dying of Aids, which he kept denying right up until he died almost.

What ever they do it should make for very interesting viewing i'm sure.

"...Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie."

Interesting choice of words, there.

I have long believed that Sacha Baron Cohen accepts his film roles solely on the condition that they depict him coming into close, physical contact with a member of the male form. So far, he has yet to dispel my theory.
