"Bullitt" Director Peter Yates Dead at 82Submit Comment
Deadline is reporting that four-time Oscar nominated director/producer Peter Yates (Bullitt) has passed away in London after a long illness. He was 82 years old.

Yates is best known for the 1968 Steve McQueen film "Bullitt," which included one of the most harrowing car chases ever filmed, and was nominated for an Oscar for both "Breaking Away" and "The Dresser."

Married to his producer, Virginia Pope, Yates had three children, one of whom, Toby Yates, was an editor on such films as "The Midnight Meat Train" and "The Dead Girl."

you never mentioned one
of the great films of the 70s
that he directed
THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE
that was a huge influence for ben affleck when he was directing THE TOWN
and mitchum was never better :)

Bullitt is still one of my All- Time favorite movies, Classic

Also Robbery with Stanley Baker (Mcqueen had seen that movie and recommended him to direct Bullitt), The Deep and Tom Sellecks Innocent man

RIP Peter Yates

No disrepspect towards Yates, but Bullitt stunk. I only watched it to catch glimpses of late 60's San Fran, and it didn't disapoint for that purpose, but as an action film, or a film of any other genre, it bored me to tears.

I have to pity people of that era, the late 60s to mid seventies, filamtically speaking, as they were losing Westerns to that genre's modern replacement, action films, none of which of the latter during that era were either well conceived or well executed IMO, and that includes Dirty Harry, which was somewhat decent, but let's face it, the pacing sucked balls like Che bobbing for flesh apples at a Glory Hole Halloween Party.

I do know what you mean about the pacing of Dirty Harry it can be a little slow in places and a little to dark in places also, But as long as Eastwood is on screen it's all good.

Now Magnum Force is one of those rare occasions that the sequel is better than the original, That is a slam bam action cop thriller that doesn't let up for 2hrs.

RIP Yates.

And if you can't watch and enjoy a movie with a tad slower pace, you shouldn't pity anyone, because you are missing out on the good stuff.

RIP Mr. Yates. "Bullitt" was a fun, action-packed movie. I'll have to look into "The Friends of Eddie Coyle".
