Val Kilmer in Trouble with IRS, Again

Posted: January 1st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Val Kilmer in Trouble with IRS, AgainSubmit Comment
Val Kilmer has been living in New Mexico for over two decades, but back in 2009, he was forced to put his 5,300-acre ranch on the market for $33 million. He since dropped the price down to $23 million and then again to $18.5 million.

AP is reporting that Kilmer is selling the house because he's in trouble with the IRS, which has placed a lien on his property until he pays $500,000 that he owes in income taxes from 2008.

It's not the first time the "Top Gun" star has had issues with taxes. The IRS filed a lien against him for $538,000 in 2009. He reportedly settled that debt earlier this year.

Another reason why Kilmer is selling the property is because he is no longer welcomed in the neighborhood, after trying to convert his house into a hotel and making very insulting remarks. Back in 2003, he told Rolling Stone magazine that his town was "the homicide capital of the Southwest" and that "80% of the people in my county are drunk."

Two years later, he told Esquire magazine that he knew how to play a Vietnam veteran better than someone who had actually fought in the war, adding that soldiers were "borderline criminal or poor, wretched kids" who only served in the military because they "got beat up by their dads" or "couldn't finagle a scholarship."

I don't see what the Esquire Vietnam part has to do with the story, but okay.

Val Kilmer is alright, I remember reading an article how some guy was saying Val was one of the better actors of our generations yet he consistently is able to choose sh*tty roles that bring him down.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with RDJ was a good movie that know one really watched.

He always seemed to do better in co starring roles like Heat, Ghost and the Darkness,Top Gun, Tombstone and True Romance.

To enhance the notion he maybe going a little crazy, i think.

Eww its a bit southwesty dont you think. Betcha it smells like Santa Fe cologne from Walmart. All jokes aside the mans been in some classics. I still smell potential for continued greatness, or maybe thats just the lingering Santa Fe in the air...

@Ari- i dont think he choose sh*tty movies, i think he took whatever he could get. he made some decent choices but then after Wonderland it was pretty terrible ( Except for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I love the guy as an actor but Val has ALWAYS had a bad rep in Hwood. Apparently it isn't much better with the government or the local Home Owners Association.

Val still does some good work every now and then. Check out:

Felon
Spartan
And his cameo as a Hwood dealer on Entourage is f#*@ing priceless.

Ya see, Val? If you would only work with Tony Scott more than once every decade you wouldn't have this problem. Tony will get you money. Plus, Top Gun, True Romance, and Deja Vu aren't enough as far as your Scott collabos. And seriously, don't you hate it when you watch the new Batman movies? Your Batman movie may have been worse than both of Bale's but you would OWN in a Batman voice competition. And you know this!
darkraven28 writes:

And seriously, did you lose Michael Mann's number in a random trash barrel years ago? Is that why you haven't worked together since Heat? You could have been in Public Enemies as a fat guy or something, instead of doing that direct to video flick about putting sh*t in Cuba Gooding Jr's head. Never actually saw it. Watched the trailer and couldn't stop laughing.

Val,

You lived in New Mexico and didn't like it ? Why the f*ck didn't you move.

It sure as hell hasn't bothered Gene Hackman. Oh, and his body of work is way more f*cking impressive than a number of those straight to DVD movies you've done. I mean, hell, you were the f*cking villian c*nth in MacGruber. A fitting name if ever there was one.

You oughta do a country album.

That's what Willy would've done.

I mean, really, what the f*ck are you and Nic Coppola (f*ck using his last name of Cage) thinking ?

I mean, you're a Hollywood actor ... you should be blowing your money on liquour, cocaine and hookers.

@trailertrash

It was a cool debut by Shane Black.

Too bad Shane's ability to work with Hollywood seems to be going much better right now than Mad Mel Gibon's.

Val plays gay very well .... I always suspected ....

@Ari - that article sounds half right. KirkL has it.

Kilmer was trained at Julliard. He has the acting chops... yet people always question why an actor picks certain projects (hint: it's for the money). The main way to rank a 'successful actor' is by their resume. Parking cars doesn't look good on one. Hollywood has offered him some sh*t for big $'s. I'm sure most talented artists wince at the crap they have to take.

JohnZee writes:

He's done a great job in several of his movies, and I hate that his acting career has become so mediocre with his expanding waistline. But it doesn't surprise me a bit that some of the things that he's said has pissed off people.

He's actually a pretty witty guy when he doesn't have a script to follow, and witty guys have a habit of pissing other people off sometimes.

But seriously if you own a copy of Spartan or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with the dvd commentary, then have a listen. Because both times his personal commentary on the movie was almost worth it's price each time.

And saying that the commentary in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has Kilmer, RDJ, and Shane Black and it is Kilmer that has most of the best lines and color commentary to me that's a pretty impressive feat of spontaneous wit.

Especially considering Downey's commentary on Tropic Thunder...
JohnZee writes:
on January 2nd, 2011 at 2:56:18 AM

...Or maybe it wasn't that Robert Downey Jr.'s commentary was so witty for Tropic Thunder, but that on that dvd commentary he was with Ben "I need to be stabbed repeatedly in the eye." Stiller, and Jack "I would say something funny but I have half of a double stuffed burrito in my mouth" Black...

Article sounds a little like bullsh*t. He's probably just shopping about. The real estate market is a sh*tstorm right now, and I doubt he wants to lose so much of his investment... especially if the IRS really are wanting a chunk.
That Esquire quote is taken a little out of context. He's being very flippant in comparing the way actors find a connection to their roles, not trying to insult all the cranky veterans (the ones who fought the Nazis are the only ones people care about anyway). This was the actual conversation:

Esquire- "You understand how it feels to shoot someone as much as a person who has actually committed a murder?"

Kilmer- "I understand it more. Itís an actorís job. A guy whoís lived through the horror of Vietnam has not spent his life preparing his mind for it. Heís some punk. Most guys were borderline criminal or poor, and thatís why they got sent to Vietnam. It was all the poor, wretched kids who got beat up by their dads, guys who didnít get on the football team, couldnít finagle a scholarship. They didnít have the emotional equipment to handle that experience. But this is what an actor trains to do. I can more effectively represent that kid in Vietnam than a guy who was there.

rabid writes:
on January 2nd, 2011 at 12:35:01 PM

His career seemed to turn southward when he got that horrible facelift that took two years to set in. For that period, he was better off starring in films nobody will ever watch.

The last great film of his I enjoyed was probably "The Salton Sea", which was maybe his best role ever.
minkowski writes:

Aren't you f*ckers forgetting Felon when you discuss his last best film?
minkowski writes:

"borderline criminal or poor, wretched kids" who only served in the military because they "got beat up by their dads" or "couldn't finagle a scholarship."

So, because Vietnam vets weren't wealthy enough to go to Harvard, or academically inclined enough to get a scholarship, according to Val, they were naturally and immediately abused kids with crminal traits? LOL!

Did this moron know that many that served CHOSE to go, not just to avoid getting a sh*tty draft placement, but to serve their country? Many of them went because they felt compelled.

Back then, even back then, it was called patriotism and many of those that went were from more rural areas with a greater sense of American civic devotion that what you would find in the blue-state megacities like NY and LA.

Does this moron know that some, quite a few actually, turned down scholarships to join the force? LOL. Do you REALLY think all those marines just went because they didn't like school?

I hope the IRS ass rapes this idiot, strips him down to his heart-patterned boxers and shoves him into Snipes' cell.

He can go John Smith on Snipes and Snipes can go Blade on Kilmer. Idiots.

Like I want to take history lessons from a guy so lazy and unmotivated that he can't lose his gut or earn enough petty cash to pay for the silly houses he doesn't even need.

I'll summarize. Talking sh*t about veterans is a d*ck move. And I wish I had the full Esquire article to read just understand the full context surrounding that foot-in-mouth quote of Kilmer.

He wasn't talking sh*t about veterans. He was only explaining the role of an actor. He creates a stereotype of the character and then becomes that pwerson emotionally, and then portrays that on screen better than a person who lived through the experience.
That's the craft of an actor.

But I was in the army, and criminal and poor would pretty much cover 99% of the soldiers I met. I don't see anything offensive, unless you're just the sort of *sshole who is looking to be offended.
