"Buried" Writer Jeopardizes Film's Oscar Chances

Posted: December 31st, 2010 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Buried" Writer Jeopardizes FilmSubmit Comment
Last spring, "The Hurt Locker" producer Nicolas Chartier was banned from attending the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony after sending an email to voters asking them to vote for his film. Now comes word that "Buried" screenwriter Chris Sparling attempted a similar tactic to get Academy members to vote for his film for Best Original Screenplay. The move may get "Buried" removed from contention.

He wrote to voters: "You are to write a feature-length screenplay with only one on-screen character. This character is to remain in only one location for the entire duration of the film, and that one location must be a 2x7 wooden box. You cannot use flashbacks, cut-aways, or any other narrative device that would take the action outside that box.

The film based on your screenplay must be met by incredibly high critical praise. Roger Ebert must give it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars and give it two thumbs up; Variety must remark that the film is 'an ingenious exercise in sustained tension that would have made Alfred Hitchcock proud'; Jeffrey Lyons must describe the film you wrote as 'Mesmerizing'; and you must be awarded Best Original Screenplay of 2010 by the National Board of Review.

Sound impossible? It's not. In fact, all this exactly describes the film 'BURIED.'
"

He went on to write: "If you have not yet seen 'BURIED,' I respectfully ask that you at least read the screenplay before casting your Academy Award vote for Best Original Screenplay. And while 'BURIED' might not end up being your first choice (or even second or third), please consider it for fourth or fifth."

Well he didn't actually ask to vote but to just CONSIDER his movie. He's not saying: "go here and click on this link to vote" or something along those lines. And yes I know that they won't vote on some website online or whatever the case.

The only thing that should be jeopardizing its oscar chances is the fact that the movie wasn't that special. Buried was good at best.

What a douche. Buried was laughably bad and besides the fact that it was all inside of a box there were constant cliches throughout.

Someone's proud of himself.
Sounds like kind of a douche and I don't think it ever had any award prospects to begin with.

Buried was not that great. The only tension I felt in the movie was waiting for the credits to see if the blackberry was going to get its name in the supporting role slot or the box was

one way or the other the crappy and boring 'social network' will win most awards.

Buried was great.

Especially the final 5-10 minutes.

This movie never stood a chance of being nominated to begin with. Composing that plea was futile from the very beginning.

The guy sounds like an *sshole in love with himself. Wait, you say he's an American from Hollywood? Oh, well then, mystery solved.

Loos like his chances just got buried.

But it's a dirty business after all and he shouldn't box himself in without being grounded in the politics of film.

Wouldn't it have been more "cute" to "pun" the critical way and say :

Buried Writer BURIES any chance for an Oscar ?

How about :

Buried Writer send Oscar contention SIX FEET UNDER ?

or

Buried Writer into Necrophelia .... KILLS OFF AND ANALLY f*ckS OSCAR NOMINATION ?

... okay. The last one ? Maaaybe a little too much.

Max, I don't think it was gonna win anyway but this is definitely the final nail in the coffin.

If the movie played by Steven Seagel instead Ryan Reynolds, Buried will go straight to DVD and doom
