North Korea Airs First Western-Made Film in Country

North Korea Airs First Western-Made Film in CountrySubmit Comment
North Koreans got a rare treat this week when the country decided to allow the broadcast of the British soccer film "Bend It Like Beckham" on television. British Ambassador to South Korea called the broadcast the "first ever western-made film to air on TV" in North Korea. The British Embassy arranged it.

The 2002 film starring Keira Knightley and Jonathan Rhys Myers was a break from the regular programming of news, documentaries and soap operas. Western films are largely off limits in the isolated country.

"Bend it Like Beckham" was chosen because soccer is a sport beloved among North Koreans. But since it features taboo topics, like interracial relationships, homosexuality and religion, 52 minutes had to be cut out. The final version ended up being only 60 minutes long.

Despite not allowing the citizens of North Korea to watch movies, the great leader Kim Jong-il is a movie fanatic and is said to have a collection of over 20,000 films.

WTF? Bend it like Beckham? What a great way to introduce the Korean commies to western film making. Why not show them Team America?

Well, it could've been worse.

They could've been exposed to any film directed by Brett Ratner.

If they had, thermonuclear war would have been inevitable.

But since it features taboo topics, like interracial relationships, homosexuality and religion, 52 minutes had to be cut out ....

because, they want their people to know ALL THE FACTS.

When they go lesbian in ... 50 years ... watch out.

Despite not allowing the citizens of North Korea to watch movies, the great leader Kim Jong-il is a movie fanatic and is said to have a collection of over 20,000 films ... most of them from Otto Premminger. But that's besides the point.

Should have showed them Commando, so they could get an idea of how much the rest of the world would love to kick their cult-of-personality asses.

Let off some steam, Kim Jung Il!

There's alot better films than BILB Stalin Jr. could have showed.

Why choose a movie that requires editing it down to an hour? And just so a handful of North Koreans can watch it? Why did the Brits go to such great lengths just to show a sh*tty soccor film to a handful of starving communists?

So, the question remains: how did anyone watch the film? No one there has a television! They don't even have electricity or running water in large swaths of the urban areas.

Havn't they suffered enough under that regime.

But of course there is a plus to a regime like that....lucky bastards!!!

They have tv sets. Every household is required to own either a television or radio to watch political speeches. But the tv sets are made to only pick up the government channel, and you can go to prison for not tuning into the president's addresses.

well for kin jong il being such a movie buff you think he would have allowed a better movie

At least it wasn't Die Another Day or Team America: World Police. I believe that Kim Jong Il is so humorless that after one sentence of "I'm so ronery" in Team America that he would launch whatever his most powerful weapons are right at California.
