Paramount Rigged NY Times Best-Seller List to Promote "True Grit"

Paramount Rigged NY Times Best-Seller List to Promote "True Grit"Submit Comment
It has been over forty years since the original 1969 "True Grit" film hit theaters, but it is only now that Paramount revealed its sneaky marketing strategy to make the film a success.

Paramount executive Bob Rehme told NY Times that the studio acquired Charles Portis novel (which Coen brothers used for their new film as well) and then researched to find out which stores NY Times monitored when compiling their best-seller list. Once the studio got that information, they sent office staff to buy boxes of "True Grit" books from the stores.

At the same time, Rehme circulated the book to people in the news media, creating interest in the movie that's based on this new best-seller. Media picked up on the story and turned the novel into a hit.

By the time Paramount started shooting, the novel became the second best-selling book in the country. And then John Wayne went on to win a Best Actor Oscar for the film.

When they remake Rooster Cogburn and the Lady, ya better tell Cate Blanchett to start doing that epileptic tic that Katherine Hepburn had during her time of filming the original. She's got the voice down, but her head has got to be a cross between Jay Leno's bobble-head action, during his late-night monologue and Paul Greengrass shaky cam, while the director does steady cam shots.

All things being considered ....

at least Paramount isn't f*cking Twentieth Century Buttf*cks.

Rumor alert WP, "Paul Reuben to star as Superman in Zack Snyders "Man Of Steel" reboot"

So rather than leaking a sh*tty, under-developed movie for torrent users to watch and criticize (i.e. Wolverine : Origins), Paramount decided to use ingenuity and placate sections of where critics graded books with a solid book that solidified an Academy Award winning movie (for Best Actor) with John Wayne previously and was also a critical classic on its own, for the sole purpose of getting audiences in to watch a movie that not only had beautiful cinematography, a solid ending ( a sore spot for some previous Coen movies ) and colorful characters, which were well rounded and bringing a new interpretation on a story people previously were somewhat already aware of ?

For shame.

*giggle*

What a tangled web that we weave when practice to deceive.

Yeah like that sort of stuff doesn't still happen all the time. Trust me if they did it in 1969 and it was successful like it was in this case, rest assured that it probably became an industry standard when it comes to promoting that sort of thing.

But who the f*ck cares? Wayne's "True Grit" justly deserved its popularity because it was a good movie. And a movie that let John Wayne invoke the full Wayne swagger near the end of his life.

Doesn't make the book any less of a book, or the original movie any less of a movie. And I think that if Wayne was still alive and was responding to this article he's say:

Wayne: Past is in the past, and you ain't taking my Oscar away from me unless you pry it from my corpse, so stop your damned belly achin!!"

The new True Grit isn't a remake, it's a different take on the original book. In other words, the 2010 and 1969 share a parallel heritage, not a serial one.

And, if you told me that the Coen brothers popularity was part of some byzantine conspiracy, I wouldn't call you crazy.
