Fox's New Game Show Makes $800,000 Mistake

Posted: December 26th, 2010 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
FoxSubmit Comment
Fox just introduced their brand new game show called "Million Dollar Money Drop," in which contestants start out with $1 million and are then asked to wager all or portions of the money on how well they know answers to questions.

And even though the show is less than a week old, it is already dealing with a controversy involving a couple which lost $800,000 on a wrong answer that turned out to be correct.

The couple was asked whether it was the Macintosh computer, Sony Walkman or Post-It notes that went on sale to the public first. They wagered that the correct answer is Post-It notes, but they were told that their answer was wrong. It turns out that Fox was wrong, because Post-It notes were actually sold in four cities in 1977, a full two years before the Walkman was introduced.

Once the episode aired and the couple lost, fans started writing to the network. Fox immediately admitted their mistake and has now invited the couple back to the show to try to win the $1 million again. The couple, however, is not sure if they want to return.

The same thing has happened a few times on the English version and the couple just comes back on and continue where they left off with a new question. Also the couple dont know if they want to come back on and try win a million dollars...well then f*ck them!

I'm with whitta and wonderboy on this, FUX should just give them the cash and shut the f*ck up.

I thought 20th Century Fox only f*cked up movies.

Well, I guess I was wrong.

What's next, Fox ?

um can't they just give them the $800,000? inviting them back isn't a fair way to settle it.

Whitta said it first and best.

WHY should these people have to come back and RE-earn their winnings?!?!?!?!

Their offer to bring them back is an insult (to the contestants) and an embarrassment (should be for Fox).

Nice work Fox. Hey, I have a quiz question for you:

Give them the money. Problem solved.

Color me confused. How do contestants earn money when they're given a million from the get go? If they are required to answer questions in order to KEEP the money, they're not really starting off with anything, they're just playing a slight variation on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

The other thing is this: like in Vegas, game show contestants are entiely at the mercy of the show's producers. Contestants sign legal doc*mentation entailing exactly the show's stipulations, likely including just this eventuality.

In other words, these contestants went on the show hopefully knowing that they had ecourse if things didn't work out right, knowing that the show has all the power, as game shows always do, and knowing that they're appearance was just that: as a contestant in a game they do not own or control.

FOX should do the 'right' thing. Rather than 'give' them the money, they should invite them back on to pick back up at the level they were at, as though nothing happened.

Bringing them back, making them start over, is as wrong as giving them the prize money without completing the show, which I imagine is legally required in order to collect any winnings.

Mink-I don't at all see how this is a "slight variation on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

I think some people are confused about this though. It isn't like these people actually won $800k and Faux isn't giving them their winnings. They just got sent home early, and otherwise would have had to keep playing. There is no guarantee that they would have won anything, so if anything they should just come back and play again. I say start them off with their full $1M and let them see if they can keep it all this time.

Oh, and "The couple, however, is not sure if they want to return." is completely BS. Of course they'll return. Who isn't going to take a free trip to try and win a million dollars?
minkowski writes:

It's like WWTBAM because both shows don't actually give the contestants any money UNTIL THEY 'WIN'. Not really. They have to EARN the one million.

Even though FOX claims that their show 'starts the contestants off with one million dollars', that's utter bullsh*t, because if it were true, the contestants, who now would supposedly legally own the money, could just say f*ck you and walk away without actually playing the game.

The fact they have to PLAY the game to keep the cash the were 'given' means they don't start off with anything more than imaginary money, a promise of a future payout contingent on answering questions correctly, which isn't the same as actually receiving a monetary gift, and is virtually and functionally identical to WWTBAM's premise of reaching the one million dollar mark by answering questions.

The way FOX works it, they just start off in the reverse position, schematically, and work their way back. So in scheme, it looks different, especially considering the way they word the show's premise, but in function, it's the same old sh*t.

That's how I see it. Unless I'm confused, the contestants don't recieve a quantifiable and real prize unless they actually 'win' according to some predefined set of rules, which is the universal premise of games and game shows the world over.
minkowski writes:

Even the Washington Post compares the show to WWTBAM and Deal or No Deal...from what I can tell, the only real difference is that the cash is physically located on the set in front of the contestants.

Still, it's no more 'their's' then if it were on a check in the producers safe or located five weeks into the future in the form of a Money Order.

It's just a visual gimmick.

Sounds to me like a very crude and brash game show, like much of the sh*t FOX shovels: loud, obnoxious and stupid. Like Che's mother getting gang-raped by the barnyard animals.

I think the couple should be compensated for foxes mistake if not the 800 at least something
DHRecords13 writes:
on December 27th, 2010 at 2:01:01 AM

the couple that was playing was a hopeful couple that had recently gotten engaged and the winnings would pay for their wedding, if the contestants choose not to return, FOX should perhaps pay for the wedding? it would be much cheaper than paying the 800k out to them and puts FOX in a positive light...everybody wins in that i think
Ranger writes:

They were playing for $800K.
They got the question right.
Give them the $800K (whether or not they would have went on to eventually lose the game. They had won the $800K at that point). Who is to say Fox didn't intentionally screw this couple out of those winning, by saying (intentionally) they got the question wrong.

Fox... you suck more than Lohan bribing a re-hab guard!
Ranger writes:

Change the name of this game show to:

'Play - but even if you're right... we may not pay you show!'
