Warner Bros Using Piracy to Sell More Content

Warner Bros Using Piracy to Sell More ContentSubmit Comment
Studios, the MPAA and the FBI have been fighting piracy ever since technology made it possible to copy movies and TV shows. Plans have always included fining, arresting and prosecuting anyone who is caught downloading or distributing bootleg copies.

But now, Warner Bros has realized that piracy cannot be stopped and the only way to keep it under control is to learn from it. And if possible, turn some of the pirates into consumers by giving them what they are looking for.

At the Content Protection Summit in LA, the studio has unveiled a look at the data that has been compiled from tracking illegal downloads over the past 18 months. Here are the highlights:

* Typical pirates steal in addition to making legitimate purchases. Even the most die-hard pirates spend some money.

* Most pirates tend to be males 18-24 years of age and use both P2P and streaming platforms. But when it comes to watching TV shows through illegal streaming, women actually dominate. Shows like "Gossip Girl" and "Vampire Diaries" are some of the most downloaded.

* More pirates use specific websites or tools rather than search for illegal content on search engines.

* The are very few people who start out looking for legal content and settle for illegal.

* 65.31% of all P2P downloads are films, compared with 34.69% for TV.

* Pirates tend to translate content for international markets. 23% of all downloads of a particular show are of the translated version. That happens around the third day after the initial air-date. By day 10, the number rises to 74%. If WB released dubbed or subtitled versions in the first two days, it can prevent much of the illegal downloads.

* Some shows (like "Vampire Diaries") are released in the US before the UK. If WB makes the shows available on iTunes immediately after the US release, illegal downloads in the UK tend to drop.

Wow. Warner Brothers is actually learning something? Reminds me of when Skynet started learning at a gemoetrical rate, and we see how THAT turned out. But hey, if they back off piracy a bit and let people have more freedom to play before they pay, then everyone wins. Good for them.

On the other side of the fence, we have FOX suing women for uploading scripts to crappy films.

Warner Bros are greedy f*ck-nuts. People are going to pirate sh*t anyway, until these d*ck faces allow cinema circuits to cut the prices of tickets down people might just stop.

The title is misleading, BTW.

Nowhere in the article does it say that WB is using piracy to sell anything, only that they tabulated and dicussed piracy statistics at a recent meeting.

You would think they were going to start knocking their movies out on the cheap through some dodgy website or something.

Like a can't beat them join them sort of attitude.

It's about time studios saw this. Pretty much everyone i know who downloads, goes out to buy a real copy if they enjoy it. Hell, most of the films i have on my hard-drive i have sitting on my DVD shelf as well.

At least they aren't going to show a sh*tty version of a superhero movie (pre-production) like Fox did with leaking Wolverine-Origins ... which was just as sh*tty when it hit the theaters.
