Michel Gondry Says Comic-Con Attendees are Fascist

Michel Gondry Says Comic-Con Attendees are FascistSubmit Comment
The Guardian caught up with director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), who talked about his upcoming "Green Hornet" film and "The Thorn in My Heart," which is a documentary about his family.

Gondry called "Green Hornet" a super-antihero movie, a description he says fans don't feel comfortable with and is the reason attendees walked out on the film's Comic-Con presentation this summer.

"I usually identify with the nerds, but these ones just reinforce the social rules. Their values are fascistic," he said. "All those people marching around in capes and masks and boots. The superhero imagery is totally fascist. When you step into this genre, they feel it belongs to them. They want you to conform, or they won't like you. They want the conventional. But it's fine. The movie's been doing very well, I think, whenever we've screened it to normal people."

Those are some harsh words, especially when earlier in the interview he recalled a schoolmate from his childhood who mocked others, something Gondry says he doesn't like. "I don't mock things, which makes me more vulnerable to mockery myself," he explained. "If you're cynical, you're protected from mockery. But I have to be nice."

Gondry is right. There's a certain type of fanboy that is too critical to enjoy anything. This Green Hornet movie may be good and it may be bad (noone yet knows), but people have been bashing the film since it was just an idea.
If the old formula for Green Hornet was working so well, then why is the character so obscure these days?
It's because that old formula ceased to work. You can't force an audience to take such a goofy character seriously. So instead, Gondry is letting his audience take a serious character goofily.

You know if you make a comic book costumed hero movie and it sucks so bad that when you present it at a comic book convention that hardcore comic book fans can't tolerate your movie enough to make it through your presentation, that that's usually a good sign that your movie is crap.

Gondry has crafted some fine films before this, but there are obviously exceptions to every rule. And every time he shows this film or even parts of this film people are either walking as far as they can away from the screen, or projectile vomiting at the screen.

And you know I'm just not sure that calling your primary audience all jack booted fascists is the best way to drum up support for your film.

...But obviously Gondry is already suffering from severely flawed logic. After all it is pretty much common sense that if you pick Seth Rogen to be your leading man in a superhero movie that you justly deserve to reap the whirlwind with movie fans for crappy ass movie making.

I won't bother introducing this one.

Here is a Jackass 4.0 version of "Translation"!

Enjoy.

"I usually identify with the nerds (being one myself), but these ones just reinforce the social rules. Their values are fascistic (Really ? Fascists believe that a nation is an organic community that requires strong leadership, singular collective identity, and the will and ability to commit violence and wage war in order to keep the nation strong. At least that's what Wikipedia says, you d*ck.)," he said. "All those people marching around in capes and masks and boots (Marching around ? Usually, in every photo I see, it's some scantily clad cosplay girl with hugh boobs, a hot bod, a nicely designed uniform and a smile. You must be thinking of that ComicCon Hitler hosted. Oh, yeah. There was a lot of goosestepping and one arm saluting there, bubblehead.). The superhero imagery is totally fascist (I should know, since I am doing a superhero movie.). When you step into this genre, they feel it belongs to them (Uh, you don't see many jocks or other social cliques getting into comics. So that must mean that all comic book lovers are fascists, by your own hypothesis, retard.). They want you to conform, or they won't like you (Bullsh*t.). They want the conventional (They want you to f*cking shut your trap, since you don't know what the f*ck you're talking about.). But it's fine. The movie's been doing very well, I think, whenever we've screened it to normal people (unlike Michael Gondry)." - Michael Gondry, thee f*ckin' prick

@rabid

Gondry is not in his element. He is calling those who enjoy comic books fascist, which means that if a kid picks up a Superman comic book, he secretly wants world domination by any means necessary.

We've been bashing Green Hornet because of the fact that Seth Rogen is a comedian that has one particular comedic trait, the 'stoned' fat slob with low aspirations or growth potential and trying to fit it in the mold of a character that had been established in the past as a masked vigilante, much like (the) Bat-Man, the Phantom, the Shadow (partially masked, like a bandana wearing gang member), the Lone Ranger or the Spirit. Kato is played by a supporting actor that portrays that Kato is humoring the Green Hornet and the villian ? Well, he has to pull out the double modified guns (thank you RoboCop/Robert Rodriguez!) to shoot down this guy.

It'll do well in the box office. But not as well as the studio will like.

Gondry's a d*ck.

WOW! Comments at The Guardian are now closed. That's one way to shut you critics up isn't it? I took the time to read your diatribe, errr, I mean interview, so I had hoped you would take the time to read my response. No such luck I guess.

Attendees probably walked out on Green Hornet's Comic-Con presentation this summer, ( last summer?), because early trailers revealed that the film was going to be 3 parts comedy/1 part drama/action. They have concluded Green Hornet will be a bomb due to a weak script, choices in casting and direction. They may have felt walking out was the best way to let their dissaproval of the film be known. They were correct!

Having seen trailers for The Green Hornet, I have to say it looks pretty bad. There's nothing wrong with fun moments in Superhero films but you have taken a character who is usually serious and devoted to fighting crime and made him into a bumbling fool. Then you demonize the audience that would support the film and claim they are facists for disliking your interpetation of the character. How will you explain to the studio that you have insulted the very audience that would have paid money to see this film?

Micel Gondry and all filmmakers-please take note:

Take the subject matter seriously-don't make a parody or satire unless it's Ambush Bug or The Tick. If you don't know who they are then don't make any parody or satire superhero films.

Stay faithful to the material-don't put a spin on it. If the story
requires Galactus give the audience Galactus. They know the mythology already. If you withhold it from them; they will feel cheated.

Prove your film school education was worth what you paid for it.
You need not be an Auteur to make Superhero films. Most time the opposite is true. The Hero does not have to bow to your rules. You must enter the Hero's world to make a good film.
