"Firestarter" and "Maximum Overdrive" Being Rebooted

"Firestarter" and "Maximum Overdrive" Being RebootedSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures and producer Dino De Laurentiis' production company (Red Dragon, Assassins) have teamed to reboot the 1984 horror film "Firestarter," based on a Stephen King tome, and have hired Mark Smith (Vacancy) to write the script.

The original movie starred a 9-year-old Drew Barrymore as a girl able to start fires at will. It grossed $17 million at the domestic box office. Although there were no sequels developed (besides the unrelated TV film "Firestarter 2: Rekindled"), the studio aims to turn the reboot into a franchise property. The goal is to begin filming in 2011.

"We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances," said Martha De Laurentiis, who has taken over Dino's company after his death last month.

De Laurentiis company has a slew of other projects in various stages of development, including a reboot of the cult classic "Barbarella," a remake of another King adaptation, "Maximum Overdrive" and a new spin on 1980s TV series "MacGyver."

They should reboot The Shawshank Redemption, because that's a King film in need of one, for sure.

Okay,

Firestarter .... I could see. I mean the original had David Keith and Drew Barrymore.

But Maximum Overdrive ?

What the f*ck ?

I've always thought pyrokenisis would be a cool power to have...especially with HOW f*ckING COLD IT IS IN CT RIGHT NOW.

Even though Max-over drive is a classic sci fi film, with all of todays tech it could be great- but they never explained how the m60 on the jeep fired. since i understood it was just electronics that were effected and the m60 has no electronics to it .

The book gets into it more, but if you pay attention to the film, her character has more powers than just pyrokinesis. It is just that her other powers weren't as developed.

And also that the Shop was so militaristic that they concentrated mainly on that.

To get a good idea of her actual power level potential imagine Jean Grey Phoenix level from the X-Men comic books...

this is the best news i've heard all week...

Should reboot Shawshank, but definitely The Shining. Maximum Overdrive could be cool, just don't let the douche direct this one

Ok rebooting "Firestarter", just wondering if they will use The Prodigy song as the theme tune.

But don't touch "Maximum Overdrive"!!!!

Yes it had problems and possibly errors in how things worked but that film is a classic.

It's not unique its a film that has already been made, character driven thriller with a supernatural edge or dodgy child actor acting older than her age being raped by cgi?

How is Firestarter 2: Rekindled "unrelated" when it's about the same girl as a teenager?

@DaveThePhotoGuy They've already remade Maximum Overdrive once, under the story's original name "Trucks".

Before you know it Hollywood will remake the following:

48 hours
A fish called Wanda
best of the best
the wraith
Xanadu
willow
Scarface

and countless others. Just make a new movie Hollywood for f*cks sake.

@justsmile

Really??? Don't recall that at all.

Both films are cult classics so rebooting them doesn't surprise me at all. Neither will their guaranteed failure at the boxoffice. Dino should be ashamed of his fall from grace though. Didn't he give us the Rambo series back in the day? Now he's just rebooting everything he can get his hands on. What a jabroni!

Firestarter was an awesome film for its time. The climax was f*cking classic!!!

Too on the nose. How about "Heatwave" or "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire".

"But don't touch Maximum Overdrive !!!!

Yeah, ... a classic piece of sh*t.

After that turd in a bowl, now I can see why he did The Mighty Ducks series for Disney and Men At Work, with Charlie (alas, the last time anyone has seen Dean Cameron alive. Coincidence ?)

Before you know it, Hollywood will remake the following :

Q. 48 Hours

A. Bulletproof (1996) starring Damon Wayans & Adam Sandler

Q. A Fish Called Wanda

A. Not after Fierce Creatures (1997)

A, pt. 2. John Cleese and his daughter, Cynthia (who played his screen daughter, Portia), have reportedly started to work on a stage musical version of the film. (Thank you, Wikipedia.)

Q. Best Of The Best

A. Really ? Unless they can dig up Chris Penn's corpse from the grave and tie piano wires to the rotting flesh and work him like a marionette, while also teaching Eric Roberts how to start acting again (era Pope of Grenwich Village and less .... as of late straight to DVD) and to lay off the weed, nope.

Not even James Van Der Beek or Casper Van Dien would touch this.

Sorry Chuck Liddell.

Matter of fact, you're probably more likely to see a Blu-Ray DVD version of a Special Edition of Best of the Best, which includes (among its many pearls of beauty in the Special Features Section) a lost interview from Inside the Actor's Studio, in which Eric tells James,

" Yeah, the toughest piece of sh*t I had to do was those readings with the kid. I mean, that f*cking kid got on my f*cking nerves every f*cking day of the shoot. And I had to WEEP like a baby in front of him ? f*ck. I wanted to just beat his motherf*cking ass. "

Q. The Wraith

A. With two f*ckups like Randy "Somebody's Watching Me" Quaid and Charlie "Wifebeater" Sheen, how could this ever be epiced ?

Q. Xanadu

A. The death knell to Gene Kelly's career (and Gene Kelly) and the ALMOST-career ending movie of Olivia Newton John ?

Only if roller-disco and Disney have their way.

Q. Willow

A. Warwick Davis moved on and Val Kilmer moved a number of pants sizes.

And I don't think they could afford Peter Dinklage or Kilmer's ego.

Q. Scarface

A. Ironic you should mention Brian De Palma's Scarface, which was a more "ballsy" remake of Howard Hawks' Scarface.

So, if you are expecting remakes, this is the horse to bet on. Only, keep the horse away from a mountain of coke and a modified AK-47 semi-automatic machine gun with the safety sawed off.

Or a bathroom and a chainsaw.

and countless others. Just make a new movie Hollywood, for f*cks sake.

Originality ? In Hollywood ? Hey, that is asking for a LOT.

All I hear from Hollywood in last 3-4 years is "Reboot" this and "Sequel" that. How about something new.
